Likely Low Cost Adult Heartworm Cure
Likely Low Cost Adult Heartworm Cure
I have always loved dogs since I was boy growing up out in the country. With no close neighbor kids my Border Collie was my best friend. I now have several fenced in acres of land with 3 dogs one of which looks like Catahoula Cur and weighs about 60 pounds. We found her as an abandoned stray at about 10 months old. We have had her for about 7 years now.
She got sick a couple of months ago and when I took her to the Vet he said she had congestive heart failure from adult heartworms. She tested positive for heartworm antigen.
I did not have the $500 to $600 for the Vet to treat her with the standard Immiticide (Melarsomine dihydrochloride) protocol. I have been to this vet for many years and consider him a trusted friend. I told him I had been treating her with .15cc of Ivomec administered orally (1% injection for cattle) (available at most feed stores) each and every month to prevent heartworms.
I asked him is there any other way to save her. He said that dosage of Ivomec does not kill the adult heartworms and that she must have gotten them before I started her on the preventative dose of Ivomec.
He told he experimentally treated a 20 lb. dog who was about to die from Mange with 1cc of Ivomec and he was cured of Mange.
So that gave me an idea. I injected my dog with 2cc of Ivomec under the skin in the back of the neck once a week for 8 weeks. My dog now is very active and healthy. When I took her to the vet a couple of days ago I had the Vet listen to her heart and he said her heart now sounded normal with no signs of heartworms.
So the high dosages of Ivomec may have cured her of adult heartworms.
Disclamer:
Be ware that even a preventative dose of Ivomec can kill some breeds of dogs related to Collies. I am not recommending this treatment for those who can afford to have a Vet administer the conventional Immiticide adult heartworm treatment. I do not recommend anyone treating any miniature breed of dog themselves. Also do not violate any law in your country concerning off label uses of medicines. But I do know that non prescription Imvomec for cattle and prescription Ivermectin for dogs is the same chemical.
