Overweight Dogs
Do you overfeed your dog?
To be honest I find fat dogs one of the saddest sights to see. It is so upsetting to see them struggling along, when really they should be bounding and running.
At a recent trip to the vets, I noticed that nearly all the dogs in the waiting room were very over weight. Are we passing obesity onto our pets?

I hate to see overweight dogs.
Usually their owners are overweight too.
Maybe they think they are somehow benefitting an animal by over indulging it, but they aren't really.

I think many dogs are overfed, under-exercised, and provided with far too many treats and table scraps.

I feed my dog 3 times a day. I feed him with just the amounts recommended and after wards take him out for a walk. Dogs need excercise too. An overweight dog do also have problems. So I try to watch out the he doesn't get too heavey.

LOL No thanks Jessica. My dogs have PLENTY of energy!! If they had any more, my house wouldn't be standing any more! LOL Usually overweight dogs are just over fed & under-exercised. If more people would go by the recomendations on the bag, there wouldn't be so many overweight dogs.

I'm pretty fat myself, but our dogs seem pretty lean lol
I also give the recommended doses on the packages for their age/weight since their suppose to be the "experts". Sometimes I think my Scotty is a bit too thin though..how much would you feed a one year old scottish terrier?

There is a variation on what it takes to make a dog happy and healthy. I believe some dogs can carry some extra weight and still be 100% healthy--just like humans can carry an extra 10 lbs and be healthy, it's when they're carrying an extra 50 lbs that things get dicey health wise.
I'm not defending obesity in dogs, or saying that whatever weight a dog happens to be at must be perfectly fine. But there can be variations on what normal and healthy is, and we shouldn't automatically accuse owners of overweight or underweight dogs of not caring about them or doing enough for them.

I don't like overweight dogs. There are many reasons why and one of them is health. I love my dog and I don’t want him to suffer future illness by being overweight. My VET once told me you could say that the dog is in right built, if you can see the 2nd or the 3rd rib on your dog.
