Default Hair loss

Our one year old redbone coonhound that we obtained at the humane society 2 months ago is losing hair- more than your would expect with springs shedding and very spotty. It started recently in the areas where our harness that wraps around the shoulders touched the skin but now is showing up in areas unaffected by friction or chewing. It appears to be whole hairs and the remaining skin is sparsely covered with hair. The unaffected spots appear just as thick as they were. She has no decrease in activity or constipation; we have dealt with hypothyroid before in dogs and this does not appear to be it. The obvious answer is see your vet which we will; any other ideas?
