Health: My dog won't eat. Is he dying?
My beautiful little buddy, "MAX", a 10 year old Shih-Tzu, has had a heart murmur since a pup. Now, he's developed an atrial fibrilation on top of the murmur. His little heart is beating 300 beats per minute, should be 120. He's on 3 meds to try to re-regulate his heart back to 120'ish. It's been 4 days. He won't eat, anything! He drinks water but not often enough, usually turning his head away from the dish. We've tried all his favorite foods, nothing. Tomorrow will be 5 days. Is my dog dying? Any VET'S out there?? Any dog lovers out there?? Anyone gone through what I'm going through now?? Please write back with advice, I don't want him to die yet, anything may help. Thanks folks, Steve in Toronto.

I'm sorry to hear about your doggie.....I hope everything turns out okay. Maybe you should try taking him to the vet.

Your dog does have some serious heart problems and there is always the possibility that he could die. But, if he's not eating it could just be because he is not getting enough exercise.Dogs need to run, jump and play to work up a good appetite. If the vet says it's ok, then maybe you can take your dog for a walk?Good Luck and *hugs*

Perhaps... this doesn't sound good. Can you get him to a vet NOW?The one thing I can say, friend, is that you don't want your precious dog to suffer. When their time comes, dogs know to stop eating. Love and hold him, and, if necessary, let him go.I think extreme measures might mean suffering for Max...

You need to take him to the vet. He might be on the wrong dose size. If they try to put him to sleep, take him to a different vet.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like "Max" has had a good run and his body is starting to wear out. It isn't uncommon for a dog to lose appetite when it is sick and it may take a few days for the meds to work fully. The big question is is he well hydrated? A dog can survive quite a while without food, but not nearly as long without water. Pull on a patch of loose skin (usually the back of the neck is a good spot) and see if it flattens back out or if it stays raised. If it stays up, he is de-hydrated and needs to drink more water. If you really become concerned, call your vet asap. Good luck and get well wishes to "Max"!

If it was my dog, I would be at the emergency vet clinic NOW. Your dog needs i.v. of fluids. NOW. GET OFF THE COMPUTER AND TAKE HIM IF YOU WANT HIM TO LIVE.Our 17 year old poodle had a heart murmur and stopped eating. The vet had some canned dog food called "a/d" and it is made by Hills Prescription Diet. . It is a can about the size of a tuna can with a white label and gold lettering. Ask your vet about it. Otherwise he will die. He can't go much longer without eating.
