Not to say a dog can't be healthy eating commercial dog food. They definitely can. There's just a lot more health benefits to feeding dogs a natural diet.

This is especially true for dogs with health issues and skin conditions.

Here's a good site that explains a lot more about the benefits of feeding dogs natural food:

Raw dog food diet

its partly that its healthier but also you have to look at these foods and how they have changed over the years. back then you didnt have a bazillion different foods to choose from, the top brands were Alpo and the like. I wouldnt feed my dog alpo, but back then, it was also a better food. many things have changed over the years. theres more research done into how they can make their foods more cost effective for themselves, but still pass the standards (or lack there of). also dogs lifestyles have changed drastically. dogs before were not just a family pet who layed around the house, got walked a few times, etc. they worked. they were hunting, hearding, etc. this helped many of those dogs to live the lives they did.

i think that its great that people are doing more research into canine nutrition, but i dont understand why people get offended when someone doesnt agree with their brand of food they chose. i have met many people who i offended because i told them that they could find a better food for the same price. instead of listening to me, and getting some education, they play ignorant and get huffy. *shrug* no skin off my nose, i know whats going into my dogs. i know what the label on the bag means. i have done my research and i started my own business making low allergen organic dog treats.

that being said i also saw a post that said that there are no healthy kibbles for dogs. i beg to differ. i have seen many quality kibbles that have worked great for dogs. i love the thought of feeding raw... but i tried it, it didnt work well for my dogs. so if youre saying there are no good kibbles and my dog should eat raw, even though they dramatically lost weight, their coats when to heck, they lost a lot of energy, and were lethargic, ok... but im not about to agree with you.

i have fed Eagle Pack Holistic, RAW, Chicken Soup, and am currently feeding Taste Of The Wild- High Prairie. I LOVE taste of the wild. i think excluding the grains from my girls diets made a world of difference for them, they never looked or felt so good.

I feed my dogs Eagle Pack good quality food but can be pricey. Innova is another good one. Eukenoba is a ok food why would you want to change? The next best thing is Nutro Ultra. Don't feed Kirkland from Costco it is made by Diamond Foods that just had that big recall and Kirkland brand had some tainted food.

I must say that I was surprised by all the supermarket, commercial brands on this thread and I really couldn't believe how few people know how to read a label! I feed a RAW diet w/ one raw meaty bone a day then dinner is a PRIEMIUM food"natural Balance". I only feed the Natural Balance as a supplement because of my busy schedele. It is a great foodw/out corn, but I also agree that there is no perfect kibble or canned food because once its heated above 100 degrees the enzymes in it are killed so it is a dead food. I always put probiotics, prebiotics and natural enzymes in my kibble.
Also so many people said that their dogs loved their commercial kibble just because our dogs might enjoy the taste doesn"t make it good--my children would love to eat chocolate for every meal too! And my personal favoritewas how dogs lived for years on commercial brands--their is a HUGE difference between living and thriving! I personally want my baby to thrive, not just live!
I do not want to sound preachy or hurt anyone's feelings' . In short always read labels(make sure to reasearchknowing how make sense of them),if you don't want to feed RAW(which is best but a little scary at first) get the best food you can afford and get the best mulivitiaum and probiotics/prebiotic/enzyme combo you can afford. Books you can read is Eight weeks to a healthier dog and The bible for dogs and cats.

I live in Canada, so I am not sure if this is the case in the United States, but most vets will encourage people to feed their dogs Hills Prescription dog food. They try to make dog owners believe that because it is a 'prescription' dog food, it is the best thing for your dog.

You will rarely hear a vet tell you to feed your dog organic dog food or RAW diets. Think about it though...veterinarians are the only ones that can sell Hills, hmmm...could profit have something to do with that?

Hills Prescription dog food, along with MANY other grocery store dog foods are the worst thing you can feed your dog.

Hills Prescription dog food claims that they do not use preservatives. Instead they use what they call an 'antioxidant/preservative' called ETHOXYQUIN. This is a chemical that has been approved for animal consumption, but NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION. It is believed to be carcinogenic. It is also regulated by the FDA as a pesticide!!! Oh, and it is also used to make rubber!

This is what many vets are telling people to feed their dogs?

Do some research, and you will quickly learn exactly what is used to make commercial and prescription dogs foods.

Our dogs deserve so much better. Organic, RAW, or home-made dog food is the best thing you can do for your dog.

Cat foodops:. I KNOW ITS BAD FOR THE DOGS! But since we have for cats and when we tried feeding dog food for the dogs the cats ate the dog food and the dogs climbed up onto the counter, table, shelf to get the cat food!
