Default Very Old & Sick Shih Tzu

Background Info - Female Shih Tzu - 18+ years old. Excessive water drinking and urination (kidney problems for past year). Almost totally blind and deaf. Throws up a few times a day. But, she still eats twice a day - and has normal bowel movements. Problem - her tail is tucked b/w her legs 24x7 and for the past few days has been barking intermittently all day - all night. I believe that she is in pain and that it would be humane to end her suffering (very tough decision) - my wife, however, is not ready. I understand her position - the dog has been an intergral part of our family for 18+ years! It's hard to let go - but, again, I think she's hurting. The vet is no help - she takes 1/2 an aspirin, 1/2 a pepcid and some thyroid med every day, but nothing has helped her situation. If anyone has any ideas - they would be appreciated. Also, if you've experieinced anything similar - your input would be appreciated.....Thanks!

Default Hello from Tiny

Hello, I have decided to find specialist. VCA Animal Hosp. In Los Angeles is an example. They have skin, eye, ear, old age etc. specialists. It is worth the money and reasonable. They seem to be more skilled than a general doctor. For myself if I have a problem I see a specialist. Look up one. Get to the heart of the matter and prepare them for bringing your wife along, they will help her as well. Good luck...I feel for ya.

Ready, I agree with you 100%. my experience is owners usually wait much to long to euthanize & this is no exception. while I'm sure she doesn't realize it your wife is being very selfish in keeping the dog alive for herself.

at 18 +, obviously suffering & in pain, it is past time to end that.

this may help, good luck
