My dog is a Pomeranian and he gets seisures. I have read up and it is has said it is normal but I was wondering if there would be a way to prevent them.

while the seizures are difficult for you the likelihood is that your dog is not in any pain when the seizures happen.

There are an assortment of medications that can be used for seizures but it does depend on how often your dog seizes as many vets don't like to prescribe for a dog that is only seizing periodically. Some of the medications are very expensive and the first line of meds for seizures - phenobarbital can cause liver damage over the long term so as long as your dog is not clustering (having more than one seizure in a 24 hour period) and they are not having them multiple times per week then the vet is unlikely to prescribe a anti-convulsive.

That having been said.....

if your dog is having a seizure don't panic but go and get some ice cubes or a bag of frozen peas and put it on the dogs head/eyes and this will sometimes stop a seizure...... you can also have intra-nasal or intra-rectal valium on hand to stop a seizure that is lasting a long time.

I would also get some breyers or other natural vanilla ice cream if your dog is not lactose intolerant and give your dog a bit of that after a seizure as it will help bring the blood sugar back up and your dog should recover more quickly.

there is an excellent resource online for dogs with seizures.....

seizures may be more common in some breeds but they should not be considered normal.

good luck

I agree, seizures should never just be accepted as "normal". there are many causes for them too. have you discussed this with your vet?

since you have a toy dog, be sure he is eating often enough. never just one meal a day as that will allow his glucose levels to drop low enough to cause a seizure, especially during the nite when they lower naturally. things like apple slices, yogurt, cottage cheese etc are great for snacks.

there are many homeopathic remedies that can help with this, for instance sclaranthus is one of the BACH flower remedies that helps prevent seizures.

Buy Bach Rescue Remedy/Spray/Cream at iHealthTree.com

you can also keep Kayro syrup on hand to put on his gums to bring his glucose levels up IF they are down.

be sure while he is recovering that the light & noise be kept low.

Default Seizures

Hi there -

I joined this forum in hopes of getting some advice for my dogs seizures, thanks for the great tips on the ice cream and homeopathic remedies.

My baby, Rocky, an akita/shepard mix, 2 years old, started having seizures back in mid June. They were fairly frequent (2-3 times a week.) I took him to the vet and the dr suggested I put him on zonisamide. That is one expensive med! She has him up to 400 mg/day. Not only does the cost concern me ($3/pill 4X/day) but the amount of the drug and it's possible affects on his liver! He is 80 lbs.

He has had 2 seizures since we started the medicine and I worry that it is more than seizures that is the problem.

Any ideas/advice?

Thanks so much in advance!

Patty
