| Puppy with consistent diarrhea, diet help? I got my new puppy on the 26th of January. He is 8 weeks old right now (will be nine weeks on Wednesday) and had his first set of vaccinations on the 26th. The breeder said he had been eating Nutro puppy formula, which is what I bought. He had one solid stool when he got home, and every stool since that has been diarrhea, sometimes runny, sometimes a little more solid, but never a normal one.
I took him to the vet on the 28th to get his checkup and explained about the diarrhea, the vet put him on a medicine (Albon?) and gave me some special soft food. He has finished the medicine now, and the food, and has STILL not had one solid stool. As of Friday evening I put him back on the Nutro puppy food, per my vet, and he is still having diarrhea each time.
Should I just wait for this to clear up? Is there another food I should be using? Does anyone have a suggestion? |

| sounds like he has giardia. Best to get him back to the vet and have them check a stool sample to see. May take couple tries. Giardia is one of several parasites that cause diarrhea in does need to be treated especially at this age as the pup could become dehydrated very easily. The med he gave, Albon will sometimes work otherwise Panacure is another that I have used and works really well.

| You got great advice, but if you can not get to the vet for the weekend, give rice, and boiled hamburg, with pumpkin, canned, not pie canned just pumpkin, for a pup, about a Tablespoon per pound.

| i agree with them, have a vet check your pet... so the vet can check if its some serious problem and can advice you properly what to do. |

| healthy Dog Food Try looking into getting your pup on homemade food. It is much healthier for them because it does not have the chemicals in it that the store brands do.

| cooked food I also agree with the cooked food, maybe try for a few days some boiled chicken breast with plain rice or with plain pasta without fat, our vet has suggested also boiled potato. Also sometimes the tap water is a problem; maybe try filtered water or mineral water without gas. Hope will work out; definitely visit your vet for further examinations. |

| I read that giving pumpkin puree (not the one from the can for pies!) help stop diarrhea. But I'm not sure if it will work for puppies. |

| I would say bring him to the vet is the best solution.
But, i had try to fast my puppy for 12 hours when she is 8 months old as she is having few days of puppy diarrhea.During fasting, no food and water are allow to your puppy. Love and Understand your dog |

| the only problem with responding by changing foods or giving the dog home made recipes is that it will not stop diarreah cause by parasites. Being that this is a puppy, it will do nothing but harm the dog to not have a stool sample checked to eliminate this as a cause. Delay in this can cause extreme dehydration which in turn could result in the pups death. Too many puppies immune systems are not developed do to poor breeding habits where pups are assumed weaned when they get to a certain age when in fact weaning does in many cases still go on but breeders do not see it. To take a chance and let this pup get worse just to try home made foods and pumpkin is a chance no one should take with a puppy. An adult dog stands a better chance but in the case of a puppy, it does not. Far too often people hold off going to the vet to get stool samples tested which is simple in lieu of waiting to see if it will just go away. With parasites like Girardia and Coccidia, this is not the case. It is easily transmitted and will only get worse if not treated promptly. The pup needs the test to confirm one way or another then step 2, look at the different foods as the source of problem.

| yogi is absolutely right, this is not something you have time to experiment with. you need to have a serious talk with your vet. ask questions, tell him exactly what is going on. perhaps it would help to write it all down before you go.
an additional huge problem here is the puppy was seperated from her mother & litter far too soon. this often causes health & emotional problems. in most states it is illegal to seperate a puppy before it is 8 weeks old. |
