Default Possable amputation

Okay, so my sister has a dog that she wants to get rid of and he has something seriously wrong with his leg, and I want him. I really think that he's going to have to have it amputated. They haven't taken him to the vet yet at all, much to my dismay, so I'm going to take charge of the situation. They said that I can have him, so My fiancee and I have been looking for a place that has a yard. Anyways, to the point How much does a leg amputation cost on average? Mind you this is the worse case senerio. Has anyone else had any experience with this? He's Pretty old, at least eleven in people years. He is such a sweet boy, I hate to see him suffering.

i hope you and your fiancee can find a new place...

anyway... the rates usually varies from one vet to another... maybe you can still save the dog's leg...

it would help if you told us what leg is having the problem. Hip Dysplasia is common and a dog will favor the leg when all that is needed are daily doses of anti arthritis meds such as metacam or prednisone. There is a really good chance that if this is a hind leg that this is an arthritis issue granted occasionally fore legs can be affected.

don't you think it is more important to get this dog to the vet at least for a diagnosis than finding a place with a yard? that may be a hard thing to find, especially that will allow dogs - in the mean time the dog suffers.

while it could be HD or arthritis, seldom does this only affect one leg. my guess it is from an injury that was not taken care of

can you describe the leg & what it is causing the dog to do or not do?

oh I just saw what you said about the swelling. the dog needs to go to the vet NOW. not when someone gets around to it. since you are "taking charge" that would be you. if you can't afford it, then have it put down

actually Sue, my malamute/wolf had HD and only in one hip. He refused to use the leg at all even with treatment. We even looked at a sling to try to get him but due to his age at the time felt it was best to not try. I also missed the swollen issue. Sounds like there is possibility of a break in the leg.

oh I know there will always be exceptions to the rule. lol

if the OP is going to take on the responsibility for the dog - she should have been overthere in a heartbeat & had the dog to the vet.

poor dog, at least 11 yrs old & nobody can be bothered. or can afford.

ask the vet about care credit or one of these but get off your butt & do something

I totally agree, instead of coming here get the dog to the vet than ask questions of the vet on the spot.
