Default medication question?

My vet just gave me a new med for my dogs arthritis. Its called rimadyl, have any of you used this and please, what has been the results? I've read different things abt. this drug and I'm a little sceptic at the moment, but I don't want my dog to suffer either.

I used it for years when it first came out for old Jack one of my Miniature Pinschers and it worked great for him. It gave him much more mobility. It is a replacement for the standard steroids cordisone and prednisone that was the common prescription. I don't think you will have problems with it as those that I know that have used all found it to be better than the steroids.

Rimidyl is a good anti inflamitory drug. But if it is used for a long period of time it can cause stomach distress as well as bleeding in the stomach. Please talk to your vet about controlled use of this drug, it will work great for a short period but the longer you use it the more chance there may be a health issue due to its prolonged use...

I have used this med. for my dogs as well, and does work well. There is another option that my vet gave me, and I think it works even better. It is called Adiquin (sp?) It is given as an injection in a series. It is a form of glucosamine but works differently than the oral version, which I also give my dog daily. The dosage is, I believe, once a week for a month, once a month for six months and then I believe once every six months as needed after. I have seen it work, and it is amazing. It was originally formulated for race horses, but has been cut down for canines now. There are virtually no side effects, as it is a "vitamin supplement" kind of med. Ask your vet about it, and see what they say. Hope this helps. Good luck!

rimadyl can be dangerous, even when not used for very long. much safer IMO is the combo Glucosamine Chondroitin MSM information and product

altho what Lady A talked about sounds like its worth checking on

I think vet will not give something suspecious to pets in regarding to their medication...because their job is to make pets good and away from any sickness...right...so better trust your vet..

I love rimadyl. my first dane was on it when she had HOD. its great for relief of inflammation and pain. the problem you will find with the Adequan is that all its doing is providing you with the glucosamine to lubricate the joints, your not finding any other pain relief from the meds itself, which is what the rimadyl will do for you. i have raced horses for years, and its been in my family for a long time. i have first had experience with Adequan. Its great for horses whos joints are dry, but its not going to work the same on your dog. i would opt for the rimadyl and also give a supplement of Glucosamine Chondroitin with MSM. (making sure it has all 3 in there, not just glucosamine and msm, or glucosamine and choindroitin...all 3)
