Default rescue dog - advice needed

We recently rescued a pekingnese - I think the novelty had just worn off and the owners couldn't be bothered anymore. They were putting him outside on a stationary chain for long periods of time - in all types of weather.
Despite that he has a wonderful temperment most of the time. He is a great lap dog albeit a little large, and he LOVES to be brushed...but to put his leash on is a major undertaking though once on the leash he does very well, pulls a little but is calm and not distracted by traffic or other animals.
How can I tell if he has been neutered? :???:
Is there any way to determine his age? :???:
I know the vet will be able to answer these questions but I will not be able to visit the vet until June 3rd.
Also need advice on pekingnese temperment and training, please and thank you.
:!:

If he has been neutered, he will not have any testicles. As for his age, I would wait to ask the vet. Good luck with your new addition!

judjing by how they treated him, my guess is he's probably never seen a vet, which would mean not neutered or vaccinated.

if his testicles are still there you should be able to feel at least 1 lump.

you are aware that these dogs should be walked on a harness & not a collar, yes? much less chance of loosing them that way if you make sure the harness is snug.

I'm sure he was a mess & I would recommend getting him to a groomer right away, but do not let them shave him down. that may also help getting the collar on if the hair is thinned out. it must go down on the skin & be tight

the best brush to use is a slicker

Red face re: advice on rescue dog

Thank you - I didn't know that he should be walked with a harness. OMG if he has fits attaching the leash to his collar I can't imagine putting a harness on him. Yikes.

the toy dogs especially are prone to trachea problems which can be irritated by pulling against a collar. also, it is difficult to make them tight enough as most people won't get down in far enough

have you put the leash on him while in the house & let him run around with it on to get used to it or is it just the actual attaching it? if the latter, try doing it while sitting watching TV
