my dog keeps chewing on one paw
hi all
i have a staffordshire bull terrier, just the other day i noticed that she was chewing on here left back paw, when i say chewing i don't mean that she made it bleed it was more like she was picking at something. i did take a look and press on the pads but it never hurt her in no way so i left it for that day.The next day she was doing it much more so i looked again and could not see anything there i watch her walking and she was doing that fine no problem i was wondering what could be wrong as she is in no pain at all but just keeps on chewing at that same paw and no other one. can anyone one shed some light on way she is doing this?
i was thinking of taking her to the vet.

It sounds to me like some kind of skin problem, most likely an allergy. As a groomer, I am around a lot of dogs with skin problems that need special medicated shampoo and care, and from what you're saying, it sounds like an allergy, either food or skin-related I can't say. I would take your dog to the vet, they can do a test on the skin to make sure it isn't something else like a skin fungus (which it could also be) or something more serious. The most common thing I see with those kind of symptoms, though, is allergies. That type of dog, too, with the very, very short coat seems to have sensitive skin. A good example is the English Bulldog, as well as Italian Greyhounds and Bull Terriers. Hope I helped

I also have a pit that chews on her hind foot. I find that she does this when she is bored. I give her rawhide treats and this seems to keep her from doing it as much.

It could be a skin problem or maybe something under the skin which is annoying your dog. Then again it might just be something to chew on! Try giving your dog a toy that challenges her and keeps her occupied such as getting those yummy treats out of that funny shape!

There is the possibility of skin problems or allergies. My dog has inheirted mange and she chews on her paws a lot, mostly around the ankle and where the claw meets the toes. its one of her itchy areas as well as the area around her tail. When I took he to the vet he did a skin scrape and determined it to be mange mites driving her crazy.

Hi, I am new to the forum and I do have a question on this topic. My dog Sasha, has allergies, or the vet said so and she only has this in the summer time, especially later in the summer when the grass gets drier, or that is when I notice it the most but vet advised me to give her Benadryl which I do but not sure I am iving her enough or it isn't working.
She will lick and chew until she gets sore spots, they stay red and irritated, I have bought several medicated shampoos but I don't think that is helping much either so does anyone have any others suggestions on what to do to help her?

In the area where I live, we get a lot of burrs, especially "goathead" thorns (ouch!). My dog often gets her paws full of these, if we walk in an area with no sidewalks. She'll stop and start chewing her paws, trying to get them out. It is hard for her sometimes, and I will have to pick up her feet to assist her. With her fur in between the pads, sometimes I don't see those burrs/thorns right away, especially if it's starting to get dark outside. If you walk in an area with burrs/thorns, sometimes it is helpful to take a flashlight and a pair of tweezers. If your dog starts limping, or sits often to chew on his paws, that is probably the culprit-- just keep looking until you find it.

Me Too!!!
My dog does the exact same thing. I usually just distract him & he stops atleast for a while. Now we use Calm Coat. It really works and is pretty cheap.

Sometimes it's a bad habit that dogs do. For some reason it calms them. Others do it because they do have allergies when walking on grass. Some dogs actually have allergies to grass. It also could be the detergent your using on your floors to clean them. It can irritate the pads and then the dog will lick their paws to try to get the residue off and then the cycle of irritation begins. His diet sounds perfect so I really don't think that's the problem. I think you will have to do some detective work and see if it is any of the things I have mentioned. Also talking with your vet will help. There are sprays that can be used to ease the itching problem. At Drs.Foster&Smith.com they have a product called itch stop than really works plus they have shampoo's made for dogs with very sensitive skin and itching problems.
Good luck, I hope I have a bit.
