Question Dogs and Ice

I was told that it is harmful for you to give ice to dogs. I would like to know if that is true. They said it causes brain freeze and could actually kill a dog since the dogs brain is so small.

Brain freeze killing a dog? Sounds like an urban myth to me. I've always thought "brain freeze" was a term used for the sudden headache you sometimes get from eating or drinking something frozen, like ice cream or a slurpy, too quickly (we've all experienced that at some point I think) but as unpleasant as it is I've never heard of anyone (dog or human) dying from it.

Well, I agree with you two. I'm going to call the Vet just to make sure. I will let you know what he says!

My old husky used to get ice stuck to her lips. Its pretty funny watching a dog walk around with ice on her face!

When my dog is really overheated I give her ice cubes. She eats them like they are dog treats!!!

So no, don't worry about it. Noboday can die of a brain freeze

I have to agree...sounds like an urban myth to me as well...always gave my dogs ice on hot days and it actually seemed to make them more comfortable...some dogs like it, and some don't..my current dog, a German Shepherd dog, doesn't care for ice at all...she just looks at me as if to say..."what am I supposed to do with that?" I still try, though. (smile)

I work at a veterinary hospital. We suggest ice cubes as low calorie (actually no calorie) treats, and to help dogs cool down when it's hot. Many dogs like them. Some don't. I can't get a cold drink from the fridge without handing out cubes to the dogs.
