SUBJECT: Urgent - Unknown Illness, Behavioral Changes, Kidney Problems, etc. I have a Belgian Tervuren, 9 months old, male. Approximately 7 weeks ago he contracted some sort of an illness, likely a virus. After this he began to change, and steadily get worse. His symptoms began with vomiting and diarrhea, which our other dog also endured but recovered from shortly. After this, he got worse. He had consistently low energy progressing to the point of lethargy, and was not eating well. More recently his urine production has gone down and he has stopped having bowel movements. Veterinary examinations have resulted in demonstrating extremely high cretanine and BUN levels. Urinary analysis shows an abnormal presence of RBC and WBC. Blood analysis shows WBC nearly (literally) off the chart. The vet also verbally indicated that she suspected blood toxicity. X-Rays have turned up nothing. Sonogram has shown no kidney abnormalities, no intestinal blockage, and no liver abnormalities, but that the dog's intestines are filled with diarrhea, and he's urinating 1-2 times per day. He IS NOT ACCEPTING WATER and only a little food. Unsurprisingly, significant weight loss has resulted.
The worst part, however, is the aggressive spurts which he has endured. Though he had food aggression problems before, he began having more active aggression. Several bites have occurred, many without warning, which have been an increasing cause of concern as they have progressed. None have required medical attention, until the most recent. This was an attack against one family member which resulted in her having to go to an after-hours clinic for treatment after annoying him, followed by an attempt to pet him - and the day after, even in the crate, when she came near, he ended up actually shaking the crate as he barked very loudly and fussed, possibly trying to go after her. This may or may not be due to him actually being afraid of her, if she somehow made him frightened of her during the annoyance. Other behavioral abnormalities include his reluctance to go outside, little or no desire to play, and often wanting to go into his crate when he is out.
I'm looking for something - ANYTHING - we can do for this dog. The vet suspected he may have had giardia combined with new canine influenza, or corona virus, or some other odd intestinal bug that's going around. As-is he's scheduled to be euthanized on Sunday. We're asking for any help you can give us because the probability of being able to afford more extensive studies such as biopsies is low, and we are also concerrned that someone might get hurt badly.
I am well aware that this is FAR from consulting a vet in an office setting, but at the moment, we're looking at ANY option available. We don't want to kill this sweet dog, which we can still see in the mess. However, we also have no idea if these personality changes are due to permanent damage or even genetic inclinations of aggressiveness, and if untreated this dog may well die slowly and painfully on his own. Furthermore, the aggression has gotten to the point where it is actively dangerous and our means of controlling him are too limited to be able to cope without assistance.
Thank you for any help you can give me. |
