Glucosamine, probiotics, sardines for my dog?
Hello fellow dog lovers
I am new here and my name is Kyle and I live in Perth, Western Australia.
My dog's name is Molly and she is a pomeranian/shitzu cross weighing 6.7 kgs (14.7 lbs) and will turn 13 years old on the 30th of November.
I have a number of questions so please bear with me.
1. To begin with, recently Molly (don't know how) has it would appear torn her cruciate ligament in her left hind leg. The vets I took her - three different clinics - all advised surgery. Given her age I'm not keen on this not to mention I would see this preferably as a last resort rather than first line treatment of the problem.
My reluctance also is in part due to the fact she had surgery only last December to remove three lumps from her belly that thankfully proved to be benign. I do not want to subject her again to general anaesthetic if it can be avoided.
I have been giving her Glucosamine mixed with Chondrotin in a powered (from a capsule) form twice daily. There has been definate improvement although she is still tender around the aforementioned area.
Am I perhaps giving her too much and should I stop giving it to her at all as she no longer limps and runs around as a puppy once again?
2. I have also started giving her a tablet once daily called "Inner Health Plus" with is Acidofilus and general bacteria of the good kind that is marketed for people. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
3. I have recently read that sardines are beneficial for omega3 and the fish oil associated with it. Molly eats everything so her liking them will not be a problem - just want to be advised as to whether or not it is worth doing and if so what amount would any of you recommend? Any vet I've spoken with doesn't really have an opinion re this or the bacteria tablets.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Regards
Kyle
