Default Need more information on nutritional supplements.

Hi everyone, I have been considering of taking nutritional supplements that could help me in reducing my cholesterol levels. The fact is that I need to maintain my health and for that I need to take care of certain issues. I have heard about blue green algae being a good supplement for controlling the cholesterol level! I need your suggestions on this and also - Do you consider for this being a good supplement???

I think that the way you are referring to that as a supplement………it can be also quoted as “organic food”. There is increasing consciousness about the intake of organic foods and I think that it is a good way to keep ourselves healthy. I have my cousin using blue green algae products that are really helping him in his various treatments. I think that they are a good nutritional supplement as they contain small amounts of protein, vitamins (including C, E, and folate), beta carotene, and some minerals. I think that this will be a good choice for you.

Fish oil pills (omega-3 fatty acids), a handful of walnuts or almonds, oatmeal (soluble fiber).

Vitamin C supplements, plus reduced sugar/flour intake and cutting out all artificial fats like margarines, will plummet your cholesterol like you won't believe - down to where it should be.

Remember that cholesterol is an essential substance though, produced by your body for very good reasons. Half of all people who drop dead from a heart attack have normal levels, so it's actually a very poor indicatior that will eventually (far too slowly) go out of medical fashion.

Anything that's good for connective tissue should help - e.g. Vitamin C, plus antioxidants from dark berries such as Blueberries, plus silica from Oat bran. The dense nutrients in algae should also be good.

Are you talking about for humans or dogs? I don't know much about giving dogs supplements, but for humans, I've heard raving great things about red yeast rice, and have started myself and my husband on it for high cholesterol.

In addition, it is recommended to take additional magnesium as well-- for high blood pressure, primarily, but it is recommended for many other things as well-- my husband has a herniated disk in his back, and I'm hoping the mag will help keep the inflammation and muscle spasms down so he can work better.

Another one that is recommended to assist the red yeast rice and the magnesium is Co-enzyme Q10. I haven't found that one yet, but plan to look for it.

And then there is garlic. Garlic is shown to be beneficial in reducing cholesterol, blood pressure, and boosting the immune system. It also comes in the form of odorless capsules, so you can still keep your friends close.

And of course, a good multi-vitamin, high in all the B vitamins, is a good start!

All that being said, all the supplements in the world cannot compensate for good nutrition (whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and lean meats/fish), and exercise. That's where my dog is one of the best things I can do for my health! In addition, studies have shown that people who have pets have lower blood pressure, on average, than those without! Just the act of petting an animal reduces tension, blood pressure, respiration, and heart rate.

Live long, and prosper! : D
