First of all, assess how well your dog is doing on the food he's currently eating. Is his general health good? Is he prone to frequent ear infections? Is his skin healthy, no flaking, crusting, itching? How is his coat? Lush, dense, glowing? Or is his coat dry, harsh and dull? Does he hold his weight well? Does he have lots of energy? Are his stools firm; no diarrhea, gas, or hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass?
If he's healthy, has good coat and skin, and overall seems to be doing well, I wouldn't worry about it. The food he's eating is doing it's job. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I have Dachshunds, and currently feed Pro Plan Sensitive Systems, which is a fish based food. In the past I've used California Natural Herring and Sweet Potato. Both foods have worked well for my dogs, one of which has allergy and food intolerance issues.
On the other hand, if he's having ear or skin issues, if he seems "off" in any way, you might consider changing his diet. There are a multitude of good foods available. Finding one that will be best for your individual dog can be a daunting task.
Try to find one that has a single protein source; chicken, lamb, turkey, fish, venison. Not a combination of meats. Look for something with no grains. And look for a food that contains human grade meats.

Hi,
Dog owners are want to feed best diet regardless of price and convenience of acquisition.I was a believer in those "Complete and balanced" diet.I couldn't see what was going on regarding these dogs with poor health signals. The poor diets are based on the corn veggies and diets based on chicken or some other meat sources.

We have been having success with Royal Canin for our Dachshund...She seems to like it and it is also recommended by our rescue...There is a special formula for Dachshunds (Healthy Joints).

Kinda a loaded question these days. Many people have their own decided opinions on the topic. The first question you need to answer for yourself is what type of food are you going to feed your dog?
The basic types available to pet owners today can be summerized by these groupings:
1) Kibble
2) canned wet
3) home cooked
4) Frozen raw & freeze dried raw
5) prepackaged cooked
You need to read up on raw diets and decide for yourself if you beleive they are better, worse or no different in health value than cooked meats for dogs. There are vets and very educated dog people who say it is far better to feed your dog a raw diet. However, there are those who beleive a raw diet is a serious health risk.
Once you've decided what type of feeding best meets your needs and your dog's health concerns, the next question is to pick protein source (chicken, beef, lamb, venison, turkey, duck are the most common) and manufactuerer.
There is a magazine called the "Whole Dog Journal" - you can visit them on line. They do a wonderful job rating dog food companies and formulations of dog food by type and manufacturer. It's a good idea to get a copy of it.
Once you have done this assessment, one bit of advice I can give you is NOT to stick to a single source of protien or a single manufacturer. It is a fallicy that one dog food can provide your dog with all the nutrition he will ever need. All you need to do is step back and ask yourself "Slim fast is meant as a complete nutritional meal replacement for me. But would i be healthy if all I eat was Slim fast for the rest of my life?" No animal should be stuck eating one for his entire life, the best thing to do is "rotate" brands. This fills in nutritional gaps and also helps prevent food allergies. It also makes your dogs life more interesting.
Good luck!

Re:whats the best food that i can feed to my duchshund?
Hi Friend!!!
I have been using normal canned dog foods by Agritura's. My dogs normally eat kibble, so they think that canned dog food is a real treat. They probably eat this faster than they would sticky peanut butter.
I recommend you to use Agritura's Canned Dog-Food Products. These products are based on nutrition's, protein's, carbohydrates & all types of vitamins. Here is the best food products for all types of dog's. For more Details check it here------------------- Agritura's Canned Dog-Food Products
