Smile do you have dog food recipes?

My dog is just over 1 yr old and she is breaking out with red spots all over her body and she is chewing at it. her hair is also falling out more than it should and is worse in small patches here and there. I want to start feeding her natural foods I can cook or prepare for her so if any one has any recipes they are willing to share I would be very grateful for them. It seems like every web page on the subject has nothing but what they can sell me. I don't want to buy I want to prepare so I know what is going into my dog. M-n-M

Hi Marilens-- I also have considered making my dog's food, but her daddy said no, I'm not really sure exactly why. Nevertheless, occasionally we run out of dog food, and if I'm not able to run to the store to get more right away, I will just make her some, in a pinch. It usually consists of a small bit of meat that we had for dinner, with some cut up fruit and vegetables, and some rice, cooked oatmeal, or potatoes stirred into it. She loves it! Anyway, having looked this up myself before, I knew there were, if not recipes, at the very least, instructions for creating your own-- including guidelines of percentages of grain, meat, vegetables, etc, and what items are safe and not safe to feed your dog. Below are three links to websites that give these instructions. I hope that helps-- Bon Appetit!

Wow. I never heard of making your own. I guess it's obvious. But just never crossed my mind... Learn something new every day.

I think that's a great idea; I don't trust the popular dog foods further than I can throw the supermarkets to which they belong. But it's a job, and not that simple a one. If you're set on preparing your dog's meals, you should probably talk to a nutritionist. Your vet or groomer might be able to recommend one to you.

As an alternative, have you heard of natural brands of dog food? They are generally much better in quality than what most people buy, and not as expensive as you might think. Take a look at this page. They could be something you'd like to try.

Here's a nice site about dog nutrition. There's some recipes on this site as well.

I hope your dog gets better soon. She's seen the vet about those patches yea?

I make home-made food for my dogs because of a book I found in my vet's office called "Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats".

One thing that book makes you very aware of is that if you choose to feed home-made you need to know what you're doing. You can't just throw a few foods together because your dog will be missing out on a lot of things he needs.

That book is a great investment, both if you want to feed home-made or if you're interested in holistic remedies for a myriad of problems. There's a lot of recipes, all the vitamins and supplements a dog would need as well as what each one does.

Please don't just throw a few ingredients together - it's just not good enough.
