Default Help, won't eat

My 7 1/2 month Dharma just had her spay surgery a week ago. She had a rough first 24 hrs, then started acting like herself. Even then she acted like she was not enjoying eating; almost like she was having trouble chewing her kibble. Maybe she just didn't have an appetite?

I have thought that she wasn't eating the same. But not sure. But today she didn't eat ANYTHING. I noticed last night she drank so much water at one time...just wasn't normal.

She acts like something around her backside is bothering her. Her incision looks good. She is not fevered (I'm pretty sure) She does still come to me and wag her tail and doesn't SEEM to be in PAIN.

There have been a steady stream of male dogs hanging around. I haven't seen them get aggressive with her. I have seen them make very polite futile attempts and she would just go to her corner of the porch and sit down. I haven't seen any of the males get rough with her. But she is an outside dog. We are home most of the time and would hear her if she did feel threatened (I think) I'm just wondering what might be wrong and what I should do. It is 11:00 pm. Probably will take her to the vet tomorrow if she doesn't eat breakfast. Just so worried about her.

Yes, definitely take her to the vet, even if she does eat in the morning. This behavior you are describing just isn't right, even after a spay surgery. Let us know what the vet says!

I took Dharma to the vet this morning. They gave her antibiotics, she didn't have a fever? The vet said she seemed okay? She seemed more like herself when I picked her up this afternoon. He has her on prednizone? and antibiotics. I don't know what she is being treated for. He said maybe one of the males did breed her. I don't know. I just hope she stays well.

Thanks for your concern.

The antibiotics may be for treating a minor infection, or to help prevent infection at the surgery site. Prednisone was probably administered to reduce inflammation and to stimulate her appetite.

Many animals will go off their food after surgery, in part because the endotracheal tube irritates their throat and the drugs used can cause nausea. Absorbable sutures are used to close the internal layers, and they can develop inflammation as the suture material is absorbed. They can also develop sterile abscesses around the internal sutures, which is not an infection, but can make them feel a little dumpy until it resolves.

She should not be around the other male dogs, especially if they are making "attempts". That could split her stitches. Plus she needs to be calm and they could over stimulate her.
