Question Gunk on nails

My dogs front paws have some sort of gunk on his nails and some part of his pads. I scrape the stuff off of his nails, and pull some off of his pads. When I pull if off the pads he doesn't make any noise like it hurts, he just pulls his paw away. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Did he get into something, or is this stuff "growing" there? If it is something he got into, don't scrape or peel it off-- instead, use a cotton ball or gauze pad soaked with a bit of rubbing alcohol (alcohol is a solvent) to rub it off. Don't use peroxide, because hydrogen peroxide will discolor his nails and the fur in his paws. However, alcohol can dry his pads, causing them to chap, so when you get done you might want to rub a small amount of moisturizer into the pads so they don't dry out and crack.

If the gunk seems to be "growing" there, then you need to get him in to see the vet, since it could be some sort of fungal infection.

Default Gunk on nails

I would rather bring him to the vet for further examination.
I agree with mydogiscute, it might be a fungal infection.

I agree. The vet can properly analyze what it is and suggest medications for it.

If it's not something he got into and has stuck on his feet, it's most likely a fungal infection, as others have said. Could also be bacterial, or a combination of both. Either way he needs to be treated by a vet.

Does it bleed of have redness? Some skin infections are not hurtful at early stage and developing internal. Hope you immediately seek vet advice.
