Default Question about "icky" topic!

Hi All! New to these boards. My name is Heather and I have 3 beautiful dogs. Foofie is my youngest, a springer/beagle blend. He has a strange problem that I've not run into before. When he is relaxing on my lap at night, about every other day he emits anal fluid (I know. GROSS!!) on my clothes. Because I'm pretty diligent about caring for his nether regions, I'm not really sure why this is happening, or what I can do to stop/prevent it.

Any suggestions???

What you are probably seeing and smelling, and wowee, this stuff smells awful, is from your dog's anal gland. There are multiple reasons why this is happening. It could be normal, it could be an abcess or it could be diet. No matter, you should have your pup checked out by a vet. The vet can check for infection and express the anal gland. He can show you how to do it yourself so you can do it regularly. A firmer stool will help a dog express the glands with every bowel movement. One of my dogs was always dragging his butt across the carpet so I always knew it was time to express the glands myself. This was no longer necessary once I put him on a raw food diet. His stool firmed up for the first time in his life and he no longer does the butt dragging thing. Hopefully, your pup's problem is as simple as that.
