Boxer Recommended?
I have a 2 year old boxer named Boozer and for the last year or so he has had very bad allergies. I wasn't sure if it was his food or what but it would get so bad that he would make himself bleed from scratching so hard. I have changed his food a couple of times and I am currently feeding him eukanuba boxer formula. I have read on a certain website that all it is, is just marketing scheme. Boxers don't need "certain" food. I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck with good dog food? I'm at a loss...

A Note on By-Products
The FDA defines meat by products as follows:
Ground up hooves, hides, beaks, entrails, diseased and disabled carcasses, cancerous animal tissue and blood soaked saw dust from the floor of slaughterhouses. These meat by-products make up 40% of most commercial pet food. The rest is grain soy meal condemned for human consumption due to rancidity, mold, debris, bacteria ground corn cobs, peanut hulls (very high in pesticide residue) ALL NUTRITIONAL WASTE then we have chemical contaminants farm animals are fed a heavy mix of chemicals; hormones, growth inducers, pesticides, antibiotics, vaccines all these chemicals remain in the flesh of the slaughtered meat.

My mother has a Lhasa with serious skin allergies--chewed herself raw and smelled TERRIBLE. My hound was itchy constantly. Mother's cat was pencil thin, losing her hair, and constantly meowing for food. We tried so many different brands of kibble but it didn't change a thing. A month ago, we started doing a homecooked diet for them. Conditions are much improved all around! The Lhasa doesn't smell as bad or chew herself raw as much (still a little but definite signs of improvement), the cat is putting on weight and her hair is thicker, and my hound isn't nearly as itchy. Commercial dog food is not all it is hyped up to be and is full of horrible sub-quality ingredients. Kibble especially is full of corn and wheat--both of which are major allergens for animals (and humans).

I have to say it like it is---Commercial dog food is not fit for anything. I fed a home cooked meal for a long time and it is much better for the dog and I thought I was really doing a good thing but it is still not the best way to go because all the enzymes are destroyed in cooking so now I feed a raw diet with raw meaty bones (raw chicken necks and wings mostly) Another thing--grains are a big reason for allergies (and I was feeding a lot of rice and wheat in my cooked meals--bad thing) I do feed oatmeal once in a while esp. if I want to give them a warm meal--oatmeal is the best if you are going to feed a grain but really best not to feed grains at all---------and cheap grains are what commercial dog food are full of. There is a lot to learn about feeding the right way and doing it right. Check out on raw feeding on the web--many informative ones out there! some words to use--feeding raw/dogs raw meaty bones diet for dogs etc. I have a message I sent to this forum with alot of website addresses in it. Just sent today but it is being held up till administrater approves it--When it gets here, hope you will check into them. I love all dogs and want to help them live a longer healthier life if I can. Do some research on enzymes too and how much this means for the health of your dog---If they get no fresh food--no enzymes and when all their enzymes are used up--the immune system is very weaked and in come diseases and bad health, etc. Dogs should have a lot longer life if fed right and do away w/so many unnecessary vaccinations which compromises the immune system also!! Sorry, I really get upset over these things--it took me a long time to learn what would have been important to know from the very beginning when I first got my dogs as pups!! By the time "right knowledge " is learned it is too late to do right. Much more to say but for another time--some to do with bad (very bad) drugs and they can kill your dog too. And don't expect too much frm a vet either--their schooling was sponsered by dog food companies (pure greed) and pharmacutical companies. My vet admitted to me that they only have 1 day training on vitamins and supplements and she did not know much about what good they can do in helping w/preventing things---They aren't taught much on prevention which should be the best direction to go!!

I concur, you need to try a good quality dog food as mentioned above, not the by-product, corn laden crap served up by most companies.
Boxer formula? Really? I had to look... and here are the ingredients. As soon as you see By-Product or Corn listed, put the bag back on the shelf! >
Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal (Natural source of Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine), Corn Meal, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Natural Chicken Flavor, Brewers Rice, Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed), Fish meal, Dried Egg Product, Brewers Dried Yeast, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Beta-Carotene, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Flax Meal, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Fish Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Calcium Carbonate, Choline Chloride, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), Dried Chicken Cartilage (Natural source of Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine), DL-Methionine, L-Carnitine, Rosemary Extract.

I have two boxers and they do tend to be a little sensitive to food. Eukenuba is over priced crap in a bag. And yes it is a marketing scheme.
I feed mine Merrick Before Grain Salmon. It is really easy on their tummies and the grain free plus the salmon equal super shiny coats! When we had Heidi on Purina, she had really scratchy skin too. Now her skin and coat is looking good. We just adopted Koby last Friday and even in a weeks time his skin and coat looks so good! He had really dry rough patches and they are already almost gone.
These are the ingredients
Salmon Deboned, Chicken Meal, Potato Dehydrated, Turkey Meal, Canola Oil, Sweet Potato Dehydrated, Dried Egg, (preserved with mixed tocopherols a source of Natural Vitamin E and Ascorbic Acid, a source of Vitamin C), Yeast Culture, Natural Dried Chicken Liver, Dicalcium Phosphate, Lysine, Guar Gum, Sea Salt, Alfalfa, Salmon Oil, Choline Chloride, Acai Berry Freeze Dried, Blueberry Dried, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Dried Venison Broth, Zinc Amino Acid Complex, Chondroitin Sulfate, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Natural Venison Flavor, Chicory Root, Marigold Extract, Rosemary Extract, Lactobacillus Plantarum, Enterococcus Faecium, Lactobacillus Casei, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Natural Celery Flavor, Iron Amino Acid Complex, Vitamin E Supplement, Manganese Amino Acid Complex, Natural Color (tumeric), Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Copper Amino Acid Complex, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin D3, Niacin, Lecithin, Riboflavin Supplement, Biotin, Ethylenediamine Dihydriodide, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Cobalt Amino Acid Complex, Folic Acid, Thiamine Mononitrate, Sodium Selenite.
Here is the site for it and you can do a store locator. Ignore the prices on the website, its MUCH cheaper in stores. I pay 45 for the 33 pound bag. I also only have to feed Heidi (52 pounds) two cups a day and Koby (46 pounds) eats 1 1/2 cups a day.

Bill jack and veggies
I have a 13 year old boxer and I rescued a boxer a year and a half ago. The rescued boxer had allergies. I put both my dogs on BILL JACK dog food, they sell it at Petco. This dogfood is wheat gluten free, I found that this made a huge difference. Boxers are known to shed alot, my boxers don't shed as much as they used and in combination with the BILL JACK I bath them with a shampoo I get from the Vet, Benzoyl-plus moisturizing peroxide shampoo for dogs and cats with allergies. No more allergies! It works. Google Bill Jack dog food and read up on it, it really is the best. I've done all the other high end expensive foods and this one by far is the best. Its very high in protien. I also steam and mix in vegetables like, brocoli, spinach, carrots and sardines and they love it. It's very healthy for them. I also keep them away from dog treats that are like doggie cookies (high in wheat gluten) They snack on veggies instead. Just read up on what veggies they can have before you give them any. I know for sure that the ones I mentioned above are good to give them. Hope this helps.
