Default my pup broke off a nail

Last night, after a play date with a neighbor's dog, Hailey came in bleeding from her foot. After calming her down I saw that she had broken the nail, and by broken I mean completely gone. She is fine, not limping, and she lets me touch it. How long will it take to grow back? Is there anything I should be doing to protect it?

Is it still bleeding? You can get a product called "quik stop" at most pet supply stores. Its a little powder (its usually yellow) that will stop bleeding. If it isnt bleeding, I would put neosporin on it and then wrap it with some vet wrap. I'd have it checked by the vet JUST in case. Some dogs are just tough cookies and dont show that they are in pain even though they really are.

Oh and wanted to add that when one of my min pins did this, I took the quik stop and the neosporin and made a paste out of it and put it on the nail. It seemed to work really well.

it stopped bleeding like right away and she really seems fine. I'll put some neosporin on it tonight and give my vet a call

Another good remedy to stop a nail from bleeding if you dont have any quick stop on hand is regular flour like you would use for baking. I've had to use that a couple times over the years and it worked great.

One of the best things to stop bleeding is powdered sugar. It not only stops bleeding but has antibacterial properties. Sugar has been used for centuries to field dress battle wounds for this reason.

Most nails will grow back in a few weeks without any problem. Watch for oozing, redness and swelling, which would be signs of infection. But other than that it's just a waiting game.

sounds like you just have to wait and see... you can also cut the other nails to avoid it..

Just keep the wrapped until the wound is healed but don't forget to change once in awhile. It will also protect the wound from dirt and bacteria.

Thanks vetgroomer, I'll try that next time.

I have cut all her other nails and her foot is healing up nicely. Although it did start bleeding again on Sun when she was at the dog park. I guess we will have to miss going there until she is more recovered.
