Default My poor Jack

Well, just adopted Jack (Lab mix) with im pretty sure greyhound, and he's one sick dog. It worries me that it has been 15 days now and the same old stuff is goin on. For Example. The runniest nose i have ever seen. Basically filled his sleeping pad with snot, and has been washed twice. Also He's not eating, like about a cup of dry food a day (and yes i tried wet). He's lathargic. I'd say spends about 19 hours a day laying down. I just cant seem to get to know him like this. I got him to be my companion and its killing me not being able to play with him, and get to know his healthy side. He was given the distemper shot 10 days befor adoption so im really hoping its not that. I think its just a bad bad case of kennel cough. Since im new to dog ownership and could use a little knowledge on dog health. How long does this last?? he's already fineshed the perscribed medication and still looks and feels the same way. Should i be this concerned? Stessing me out..... can anyone atest to this?

I'd take him back to the vet and ask them. He should be doing better by now if it was just kennel cough and he's taken meds for it.

I agree... Your pet should be ok now especially if you are following the vet's prescriptions to Jack...

Respiratory infections are dangerous for dogs. If the perscribed medicines did not do the trick, you need to call the vet and let them know. They will most likely want to see him again. Be prepared to tell them about the frequency and consistency of his poops and the frequency of his urination. They'll also want to know what specific food you are feeding him (including any treats) and how much he is eating. They'll also want to know about any coughing and vomiting.

Anyway, I'd definitely take your new friend back to the vet...it sounds like he is a very sick boy. I know you are wanting to bond with him and this is slowing that process down BUT this will help him learn to trust you and look to you for his needs.

Keep us posted on how he is doing.

Well, just got back from the vet and boy oh boy is my jack sick. He took two X-rays, both showing obvious signs of pretty bad pneumonia. I have to take him into the vet everyday for treatment. Im worried sick now, cause everything leading up to this was signs for distemper. However he is being treated now so hopefully he'll bounce back like a champ.

Thank you, and already an improvment. I broght him home from a long 5 hour day at the vet, and finally i sawthis dog eat like a real dog should. Id say huffed down the 3 cups of dry food, and a can of special wet food i got for him at the vet. Because of this ive noticed a little more energy, but still pretty lazy. I guess just the first of many good signs to come.

I'm just sooo glad you got him into the vet, and got this found out before it was too late! (I bet you're glad too) You know, when I adopted my Annie, she had contracted a bit of kennel cough in the shelter, but she was lucky in that her immune system fought it off with no complications, aside from a bit of coughing when she runs/plays too hard, and some springtime sneezing with grass pollens. And she was only 3 months old at the time. Whew! I feel blessed!
