Exclamation I need help and advice on two issues...this is my dog but it isn't

Okay I have two issues in one. So I will post the first one and then I will post a reply with the second one.

Both issues are related.

This is regarding a dog and my parents (I moved out almost two years ago and got married and have since brought into my home 2 dogs..)

The dog in question is a Tiny Toy Poodle () I am rolling my eyes

I know that is a BYB selling term

As far as I am concerned she is my dog. I trained her, I fed her, I let her out, I was the one to take her to the groomer and to the vet. I was the only one to spend time with her. My parents and sister were always gone...my sister was a dancer and on weekends she had competitions and then they would work all week and she was at school.

I would come home from Classes (at the college) and let her out and spend time with her before going back for an afternoon classes (I set up my schedule around her needs)

When I had a job I made sure I worked the second shift. (I was a tour guide) That way she would only be left home in the cage for about 2 hours. (I would leave for work at 1:50 to be there at 2:30 I had a bit of a commute)

When I moved out I planned to take her with me. But my parents decided they paid too much for her to let her go with me. (she is kind of a status symbol to them I think) and I even offered to pay them for her.

But they wouldn't let me.

Well now she eats food that is bad for her (Beneful) and she is home alone a lot. They don't keep her crated but she is home alone alot.

Since I left she developed separation anxiety and she cut the pads of her paws open trying to dig her way out of the gate area. She has mostly free roam but the gate her from going upstair and in the landry room.

I want that dog back but I know I can't have her but I still want to take care of her.

I've since gotten two dogs of my own and they are wonderful but I still worry about her.

I tried to convince my dad that she needed a better food but he won't listen he swears by Beneful (the vet told him Science diet was best but beneful would be okay)

But its not good. She keeps hurting herself. They said if the behavior keeps happening when they are gone she is going to have to be crated.

She is very unhappy I think but at the same time she probably wouldn't be happy with me either....I think it was just the dynamic change.

How can I help my dog when my parents won't let me?

How can I help her when they won't listen to reason.

I have done so much for this dog....she wouldn't even be potty trained if it weren't for me.....

She is just an accessory to them.....I offered to buy her from them (I offered to pay more than they did inially for her but they won't budge)

Default Issue Number 2

How do you explain to someone who thinks they know best that the dog food they are feeding is bad?

I ask because this was my dog.....and she stayed with my parents because they said that she cost way too much money for her to just leave with me.

She is a Tiny Toy Poodle. They paid like 1200 for her.

Anyways they feed her Beneful. I know its not a good food and my younger sister who still lives there knows its not a good food.

When they came to visit we told them about the food our dogs are on. California naturals.

And my dad was like "You didn't listen to me and feed Beneful? Beneful is the best!"

He was upset I didn't take his advice.

I explained that this food was better for our dog.

But because he never heard of it and they don't advertise on tv he automatically doesn't think its a good food and refuses to read the label.

His vet said beneful and science diet were the best.

We have the same vet and we know that is just crap.

Anyways my sister knows this dog would benefit from a better diet and so do I.

The dog is 5 years old and would be healthier if she had a better diet.

But how do you convince someone that there are better foods out there when they don't want to hear it?

When they are the type that has to be right all the time?

I'll admit to them I think this dog is more of a status symbol but still. She is a living creature and they can afford the best so they should give her the best.

Anyways its so frustrating. I care about this dog because she was my dog.

The problem is I still see her as my dog and I still want her.....and if I can't have her I want her to be well taken care of

Should I just let the whole thing go? Should I just let her go? Or should I keep fighting for her?

Keep fighting for her!!! Sounds like your parents are being selfish with the whole situation. It is not fair to you or the dog. She is basically your dog since you have taken care of her all this time. I wish the best of luck to you.. If you bug them enough for her maybe they will finally give up and let you have her.

Have to say, your dad sounds like a tyrant! Hope you have a printer---What I suggest is putting Beneful dog food/rating in your browser--Will bring up a lot of web results---Take awhile to go through the web results--some I suggest are: 1. Beneful-Reviews on Rate It All 2. Review of Beneful dog food by Purina 3. Beneful Dog Food---click on #1-Beneful Original Dog Food
I would hilight and copy what you need to convince your dad of this bad dog food (wouldn't copy the posts that are saying it is good 'stuff', would just give your dad more fuel). As far as I'm concerned, the good reviews don't know what they are talking about--just because it seems to be working now,
doesn't mean it isn't damaging the dog and may not show up until it is too late, etc. Beneful is lacking in protein--it's all grains(mostly corn)--dogs can't digest or get much good out of this stuff---causes allergies in dogs among other things (Geeez, I feel so sorry for most dogs--they are slowly( and sometimes not so slowly) dying from malnutrition.) And the reason some dogs seem to love this 'crap' is because it is full of sugar---more sugar than the veggies they advertise in their ads!! As far as the vets selling dog food--they are either greedy, stupid, or just don't give a damn---They shouldn't even be selling it, let alone promoting it!! And after all their schooling is sponsered by these crappy dog food companies, etc. Sorry, I get so upset when I start thinking about all the greed there is in this world. And like you, dogs mean everything to me. And Science Diet is another bad dog food-not much better than the Beneful. You could prob. put Science Diet/rating or something on that order in your browser too (I never tried it) Will come back later and quote from my vet book to do with Pancreatitis--got to get out of this forum for awhile. That website listed in the other post to you has some info on this but you have to scroll down a ways to heading: Pancreatitis
in Dogs. Hope you can get it in your dad's 'noodle' about those bad dog foods! I have a bad feeling that he'd rather ignore the truth and still feed bad stuff just so he doesn't have to admit he is wrong! Poor dog!
