Default I think we need a second opinion....what would you do?

How would a vet typically diagnose Pancreatitis?

I ask because I'm not so sure that is what is going on or the only thing going on.

My dog has been having tummy problems since he was 7 months old. He is now 1 year and 6 months old.

I think there is more going on then they think...Ofcourse they ran some bloodwork. The typical blood work they do when a dog is sick. (they tested his liver and he had high enzymes and said everything pointed to pancreatitis) If I understand that correctly.
They gave him fluids for dehydration from the vomiting and diahreaha. And gave him antibiotics (both flair ups) and sent him home.

The problem is he doesn't seem to be getting better. He continues to lose weight and still has the tummy issues. We've changed his diet so its comepletely low fat and he has never eaten anything but dog kibble (he hasn't had any people food...except now he does eat yogurt to build up his immune system that was destroyed by all the antibiotics)

I I think I am going to be taking him to a new vet. This vet treated my other poodle for 14 years. I just want to be sure. You know

What do you think?

I am not happy with this vets office when we moved here we went to the vet my dad suggested....unfortunatley they are not too fond of my dad (he can be kind of a jerk especially when it comes to his dog) and they are very rude with me.....(and he isn't even my real father but they don't know that) and don't want to work with me. They are so pleasant with their other clients.

He is just so young and pancreatitis is normally in older dogs after having years of fatty foods. And he just isn't getting better with treatment....I think there is something more going on unless its the more agressive form which is found in young dogs.

I wanted to add he is a poodle and he didn't come from the best breeding situation...

I just want to make sure we are doing everything we can for him. He just isn't getting better

If your not happy with your current vet, then I would deffinatly look for another vet. Also, considering how long your boy has had this problem and dosent seem to be showing improvement a second vet may find something that the first one missed.

I would definitely get a 2nd opinion. Been there, done that. At first I kinda felt like I was cheating on my 1st vet, but when the 2nd vet came up with a completely different diagnosis which was then confirmed by an animal eye doctor I'm glad changed vets. Not that I don't think the 1st one does a good job, but that sometimes it is best to get a new set of "eyes" on your animal.
