Exclamation Worried Sick Dog any advice ?

Nicky my 2 and a half year old Wienerama who goes everywhere with me from work to play is sick. On Monday she started to favor the front leg and acting different from her usually out going self. By 7 pm that night she was running a 104.5 fever and was listless.

I took her to the local animal hospital and was informed she tested positive for Lyme disease. She was put on doxyyicline and Tramadol. On Wednesday I took her to my vet because the fever was still high and she could not put weight on her back legs. the Vet upped the doxyyicline and gave me an noninflammatory to use Carporfen.

Today Thursday its been 2.5 days since I started medication her fever has broke and she looks a little better but she can not walk on back legs.

I am just wondering if anyone has been through this or knows if this is common and how long before she can walk again. Niki is very impotent to me and I am worried that her not being able to walk could be something other that the affects of Lyme Disease. If it is from the Lyme disease how long should it be before she starts to walk again.

Any insight on Lyme Disease or the problem with rear legs welcome.

Thumbs down

I don't have the answer you are looking for, But do want to make you aware of the very bad effects of CARPORFEN----This is another name for RIMADYL.
This is a very bad drug (Rimadyl is a brand name for Carporfen) Please see other postings in here on this 'stuff' It can ruin the dog's liver--can kill your dog!! I think one of the posts has web address(es)--Please check out and if no web address----Put Rimadyl/side effects in your browser. I have a feeling that because your dog already has big problems--prob. immune system is already compromised and liver already stressed--I just am worried about this
'poison' being too much--It is something that my dog had--only one--the rest went in the garbage--He did have an immediate reaction to it but this stuff will damage the liver--How long it might take, depends on the individual dog. I know there is a web site that has many comments from people who have lost their dog to this 'crap'! I would not take too much stock in what your vet would tell you on this either (or not tell you)! Check it out for yourself.

Default A little info

Just checked out about Lyme Disease in my Vet Book but before I quote what it says--Did the vet have any idea or way to estimate how long your dog may have had this?? Think I read somewhere that there could be more problems that could arise the longer it has gone untreated---like arthritis and it possibly being a permanent thing. Will quote: Lyme Disease is spread during tick season (May through August), peaking in the month of July. The disease in dogs is characterized by the sudden onset of lameness. In fact, lameness is often the only sign of infection. One or more joints may become painful and swollen and painful to the touch. Some dogs run a fever and experience weakness, lethargy, loss of appetite and weight loss. THE LAMENESS MAY LAST ONLY A FEW DAYS, BUT IN SOME CASES IT BECOMES CHRONIC AND PERSISTS OR RECURS FOR MONTHS. Treatment: Antibiotics are given for two to four weeks. Ampicillin and doxycycline are among the most effective.----end of quote. This book is 10 yrs. old but still a good book --only thing being, maybe newer meds. out now---BUT that doesn't necessarily mean a good thing--At least there is no mention of Rimadyl in here!!

Your dog needs probiotics to put the good bacteria back in the gut that the meds. destroy. I can't keep repeating things that I (and others) have already posted about things before. Please check out the entire forum that is titled Dog Health and Nutrition in this forum. There is a lot of info on a lot of things here and esp. look for posts to do with-yogurt-probiotics. Your dog needs this good bacteria to keep healthy. Sorry, I am in this forum too much some times and guess I am tired right now---My problem is that I feel so sad for dogs and I just can't do enough to help them. It 'wears' me out mentally. Anyway, if you can't find or understand the things I've posted to you---Just let me know and tomorrow I will be 'fresher'.

Default Sick dog

Metacam is good. This is a non steroid anti inflamatory med. Ask your vet about it. I began to give this to my older boxer when she was 11 because her back legs were bad, now she's 13 and runs around like a 5 yr old! I dont know if your in florida but if you are and she is not better contact florida veternary specialists. This facility is wonderful.
