I give them to my dogs....they love them and I've not heard of any concerns with them. They may stain carpet so beware of where you dog settles to eat the thing.

I also occasionally give my dogs calve hooves...these are also quite popular with the canine crowd. One warning though...they hurt if you step on them barefooted...the level of pain is proportional to time of day/night (for example, it hurts worse when stepped on at 3am than at noon).

Marrow bones (raw) with the marrow still in them...not those hollowed out things you get at the pet store...the real thing you get from the butcher...are a 100% guarantee of a quiet night of TV watching.

I don't give rawhide--those are preserved with formaldehyde.

I don't give the commerical dog treats (Milkbones, "beggin strips", etc.) because they are just chemicalized food-like substances....the 'twinkles' of the canine manufactured food world.

I prefer to make home-made treats. They prefer it, too. :-D

They are okay UNDER SUPERVISION ONLY! Any dog bone should be supervised when given. But things like pigs ears can fray into large pieces which can become sharp. If your dog has a tendency to swallow huge pieces of things, avoid them. My male Boxer likes to swallow things so pigs ears are off limits.

They love marrow bones. They can chew those things like crazy and its pretty much impossible to actually chew them. They are the everlasting gob stoppers of the dog world lol

What kinds of homemade treats do you make?

I make a Liver Brownies which they like okay...most people's dogs go crazy for liver brownies...either I'm doing something wrong or I've got weird dogs. (For one thing, I don't use wheat flour so that could change the taste a bit.)

I also make a Fish Crisp...made with canned mackerel, olive oil, oat flour, and eggs. It is nice and smelly and works great for getting the dogs to practice their good behaviors.

I made a cheese crisp but it wasn't quite as appreciated as the fish version. They would rather I just give them straight cheese...which I do by buying a sharp cheddar and cubing it and then as I'm treating I can break it into smaller pieces.

I've also been known to boil up some liver (beef), cut into small squares and dehydrate. They love it!

There are other treat recipes I want to try but haven't gotten around to it.

I need to try some homemade doggy cookies because when I groom them, I like to reward afterward and even the "healthy" store bought doggy cookies just aren't appreciated by my crew. They peanut butter (a favorite for most dogs) so I want to make some peanut butter cookies for them.

My pooch loves pigs ears, but unfortunately they don't love her. She vomits after chewing on one for a while..I don't, of course, give them to her anymore. I had heard that they can be a choking hazard anyway and I had a close call with a Yorkie getting a rawhide stuck in her throat and do not wish to repeat that horror again.

I give them too every once in a while, my 2 Rotties love them! Of course, I must supervise them as always while they eat them. Bully sticks though remain my favorites and theirs as well, they really last looooong and allow me to relax as I know they will work on them for hours, as a matter of fact I think they all the longest lasting bones, uhhm if that's what we want to call them...

I had no choice but to buy an £8 packet of pigs ears from our pet store as my husky stole it from the shelf and tore it open, so she has one every now and again when im with her and she LOVES them x
