Question Any advice appreciated

Hello, I have a 7.5 yr old Rotty, not spayed, and she is having vaginal discharge, not smelly, kinda tan in color, no fever, still active, but not eating as much. Trips outside are many, and she does urinate, and then stands there, looks like still trying to go more. She is not whining, and seems like herself. I have read much on the internet, but figured this might be a better place to ask questions. Could this be a UTI ? She had her heat cycle in Jan-Feb, and I have seen a very small amount of blood in urine, but figured it was her cycle passing through her urine...We have a vet appt first thing in the morning..But what I would like to ask is...anyone here dealt with a dog with a UTI ? Just exactly what are the symptoms? Anything I can do for her to make her comfortable or help her till the vet tomorrow?? Any comments appreciated.
Thanks- Dawn and "Zana"

I would take her to Emergency. Yes, it could be a UTI but what it sounds like to me is a Pyometra which is easily fatal... I had a bitch who had it and I came VERY close to loosing her. She required emergency surgury... it was expensive so I asked the vet what my options were adn they told me they can do the operation or they can keep her comfortable until she passes (which they said would most likely only be a few days). I know how hard it is to have vet issues on the weekends, it leaves many of us in bad situations but if you have a 24 hour emergency clinic near you I would recommend that. Please let us know how she is doing!

Question Update

Took my dog to my vet this morning, looks like its Pyometra, she was put on Ciprofloxacin, and I was referred to another vet for surgury. Called other vet, was told my dog has to be on an antibiotic for a week prior to surgury, and for me to call next week for a consult and appointment for the procedure. To spay my dog will be $350.00....does all this sound right? Is Cipro used on dogs? Wait a week?? My vet said she needed something strong, its 500mg..any comments appreciated.

Thanks Dawn and "Zana"

My vet said surgury right away or she would die. I would talk to other vets today and get their opinion just to be safe.

$350 is a VERY good price... not sure where you live but to spay a large dog where I live is between $500 - $1,000 for regular spay and my girls emergency pyo spay was $1,800!!!

Question Reply to update

Now Im lost...the second vet I talked to today said she would HAVE to be on antibiotics for a week, and my vet said she doent have the pyo with the closed cervix, its open, so it would drain, that I also should have her on meds for a week before the surgury...The vet I talked to is a specialist in this field..and said 1 week on meds...I live in a small town in Ga, I dont want my baby to die...I even called another vet in SC, and they wont even do it.."they only spay healthy animals". Its sad, cause I dont know what to do now...I did manage to get the pill down her throat, so thats 1 day of meds in. Say a prayer for us, Im limited on where to go and whom I can see...not all vets care, this is obvious. But thanks Orangedog for your replies...will update when I have news

Have u heard of Cipro in dogs?

Default From My Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook

Going to quote from my vet book, but keep in mind that this book is 10 yrs old. Treatment: Pyometra requires immediate veterinary attetion to prevent shock and death. Hysterectomy, along with antibiotics, is the treatment of choice. It is best to do this operation before the bitch becomes septic.
When it is important to preserve the reproductive potential of a valuable bitch, an alternative to hysterectomy can be considered---providing that the cervix is open and the bitch is not septic. It involves the use of antibiotics along with prostaglandin. Prostaglandin PGF 2a (Lutalyse) relaxes the cervix, stimulates uterine contractions and evacuates the pus. Lutalyse is administered by subcutaneous injection daily for 3-5 days. If evacuation is not complete, a 2nd course is given. Antibiotics are selected on the basis of sensitivity tests and are continued for 1-3 wks after evacuation of the uterus. Lutalyse is not licensed (remember this book is 10 yrs. old!!) by the FDA for use in small animals, but nevertheless widely used for this purpose.
Prostaglandin treatment is accompanied by a number of dose-related side effects, including shock. Uterine rupture may occur when the cervix is closed. Many veterinarians regard closed-cervix pyometra as a contraindication to the use of Lutalyse.
Bitches that recover from pyometra are at increased risk for developing it again on subsequent heat cycles. They should be bred on the 1st estrus after recovery to maximize their chances for fertility.

I will keep my fingers crossed and say a prayer for your girl. Keep talking to vets in your area and see what they have to say.

I am not familiar with the use of Cipro in dogs so I don't really know what to tell you.

Please keep me posted with how she does!

No one here can give you a better advice than a vet...
