Default Blood Pressure/Kidney disease

I put this in chat but I probably should have put it here instead.. Sorry.

I am curious as to whether your vet does a routine blood pressure test or not.

I have never seen one done on any of my dog's until yesterday.

I had a wellness check done on him (blood work) and a urine test. He tested positive for Lyme disease and high protein level's in the urine.

After another urine test and a course of anti-biotic's his protein level is still to high.. The vet suspected the protein level may be coming from high BP so she checked it yesterday and sure enough he has high BP...

I'm thinking if this would have been part of the regular exam we could have saved alot of time, money, worry and $$$ as I am finding out that high blood pressure and kidney disease seem to go hand in hand....

Just curious if your vet perform's a routine blood pressure check..

Default BP and renal failure

Hi there.
Unfortunately my vet also didn't ever test for BP He didn't check when he determined that Patch had Chronic Renal Failure and it took Patch having a stroke and a seizure to finally get the BP cuff out. Turned out that Patch's pressure was sky high, made even higher by taking the proin incontinence meds. (no longer taking those) Patch (14+yo English Setter) is now taking Benazapril 10mg 2x/day and his pressure has come down quite a bit.

Patch also has a lot of protein dumping in his urine as well. If your dog does in fact have renal failure, make sure that he/she is on a phosphorous binder. Someone in this forum steered me to the yahoo group K9Kidneys. They just have a ton of info on different kidney problems with our pups. There is also a K9Kidneysdiet yahoo group. Both of these groups help you set up a good regimine of diet and supplements for our CRF dogs. In fact, I never realized that my Patch was probably nauseated and having heartburn. I now have him on Zofran (anti nausea) and Pepcid AC. He now eats much better and has put on a little weight. (He had dropped from 70 pounds to 50). With all of the protein dumping in his urine, he was losing weight pretty rapidly.

Hope some of this info helps out.

Thank you for your reply and yes it does help out alot.. I feel now that blood pressure check's should be part of a routine exam. Why not, we get our BP tested everytime we see a Dr. It should be part of the exam.

chevy also take's Benazapril but he only take's it once a day at this point anyway.
Thank you again for your reply.
Please give Patch a big hug from chevy & karen.
