Hyperthermia
Hi all. Just want to give a little info so that the rest of you don't go thru the same horrible scare that we did. Patch is 15 yo English setter with renal failure. when I came home from work last friday, found him on the hardwood floor shivering. Thought it was odd given that it was hot out here friday. We were afraid that patch had some type of infection, either from the subq needle sticks that he gets with his daily kidney flushing fluids or a UTI, or something just as scary for him. His temp was 104.4. Long story short, $1200 at the Animal 911 clinic over night, blood work, xrays, urine test, etc, turns out that Patch was just terribly overheated. Both the ER and regular vets said that older dogs have more difficulty in cooling themselves off, something to do with their larynx and the inibility to pant efficiently. So all those with "senior" dogs, please be extra careful on those hot day walks and runs. Make sure that they get lots of water. Patch only walks in early morning or evening now, and always has his water bottle now.
