Default Sea Water/ Sickness

Hi All... my first post here, thanks in advance for any help you can give!

My 15 pound terrier mix went for a long walk on the beach with us today and while we were walking, she drank some of the water. Not lots, but ever once in a while she would lick it up. We have 2 dogs, same size/type and they both seemed to be doing the same thing. I tried to get them to stop of course, but they did drink some.

One of them is now fine, the other one is very lethargic. After our walk, they both drank LOTS of fresh water, and she seemed fine at first, now she just lays down. She sits on our lap, when we put her down she lays right down where you set her. It is very unlike her normal personality. I have offered her water which she doesn't really drink, and I have offered her treats which she does eat. I haven't noticed any vomiting or diarrhea from her, but have not watched her every second while she was outside.

Thanks again for any advice... I am wondering if I need to shell out the bucks for the after hours vet at this point.

Thanks!

Jenny

Smile salt water

Long walks sunshine and the added salt water may have just made her very tired. I would wait a day to see if she perks up the next day. I have found i can only leave my one year old out in the sun on a leash for a 1/2 hour at a time as it just drains her. she no more than gets in my back room where i take off her leash and she immediately lays down on the cement from being to tired from barking and the sun even though she has shade. then she is fine.

Thanks! I hope she is just tired! I called the vet and they said to watch her, bring her in if she needs it, but make sure her poops and pee is normal, try to get her to drink etc... pretty normal stuff.

They also said she may have just over done it playing and running. Poor thing!

She very well could of been infected by drinking the water. I am going to give you some names of diseases that could happen if the water was contaminated---put the words in your browser along with the word/dog. leptospirosis/dog; campylobacteriosis/dog; histoplasmosis/dog;
cryptococcosis/dog; blastomycosis/dog; and giardiasis/dog . These are all mentioned in my home vet book. Bird droppings may of been a source and wouldn't necessarily be in the water!! It could be a lot of things. You need to make the decision to take her to the vet or not. If she is infected--will prob. need some meds to fight whatever it is!! And if she needs meds because of some kind of infection--the longer you wait--prob. harder to treat!!

Observe your dog if she looks not very well...
You need to go to your vet for check up...
Probably the water was contaminated or something...

Default water

The water can't be contaminated or both dogs would be sick and she said the other one was fine.

I'd take her to the vet asap. Perhaps something in the water didn't agree with the one dog? Also, the sun can take quite a toll on us and them.

I'm not so sure about that!! The dog could of picked up something the other dog did not come in contact with---like something not even in the water--ground near-by (bird droppings, etc) and maybe the other dog has a better immune system too. Or may not of gotten a big a dose of whatever it was.---I see several possibilities.

You just 'triggered' another thing in my head--Don't know how much salt is in this water--but too much salt is not good for dogs either and if I remember right this dog drank more than the other dog---------maybe too much salty sea water made the dog ill ! But if the dog is not better by now--I sure would see the vet!
