Our new baby has parvo
We brought home our lovely little man - 9 weeks old (Shepherd cross) on Monday. He had a long drive to get to us Monday and had thrown up in the car. Monday night he had a little drink and threw up and had no interest in food. We thought he was just stressed out. Tuesday morning he was so lethargic that I moved up his app't with our vet to get him in right away. Sure enough he tested positive for Parvo. We then found out his littermate died Monday night after only showing symptoms for a day. These puppies came from my sister, her female dog had an oops before they got her spayed, these guys were well taken care of and the symptoms came on within a day. I just don't want anyone thinking he was from a puppy mill or some nasty place. The other puppies that went to other homes are fine (so far...fingers crossed)!
He is currently hospitilized getting IV, anti-biotics, anti nausea medication. The vet called and said he is a little more curious today when they go to check on him and he hasn't thrown up since he's been there.
I am wondering if anyone else out there has any success stories? I'm keeping up hope and even though we've only known him for 24 hours this is breaking my heart to think we might lose him already. He's just so young to be fighting for his life so hard.
Thank you.

I have no personal experience with parvo, but I'd like to say that I feel for you. Parvo is the scariest word when it comes to puppies. I am so sorry that you have to go through this and I hope and pray that your baby will get well.

I've never had to deal with parvo either. I'm so very sorry you're going through this. Keep your hopes up. It sounds as if things are a little better today. You and your baby will be in all of our thoughts and prayers!

I posted a little earlier above and said I couldn't tell you much. Well, in the mean time I checked in a book I have titled Earl Mindell's Nutrition & Health for Dogs. This book is 10 yrs old and tends toward a lot of holistic type ways to deal with problems. Am going to quote:
A poodle puppy named Seymour is alive today because of the healing qualities of Vitamin C. Seymour was brought to Dr. Beverly Cappel-King with vomiting, dehydration, and severe intestinal bleeding. A test for the parvo virus, which is often deadly for puppies, came back positive for the parvo virus.Dr. King immediately put Seymour on intravenous therapy, which included megadoses of vitamin C to stop the bleeding, potassium for the dehydration, and antibiotics to battle infection. The internal bleeding stopped in about 6 hrs, and Seymour is now a healthy, happy adult.end of quote.
Now your vet prob. will tell you that dogs don't need vitamin C--He is wrong!! Esp. needed for dire situations like this!!! Wish you could show this quote to your vet (Have a printer?) and see if you could get him to try the above mentioned things. By the way--If your vet is not too young--He may of heard of Dr. Beverly Cappel-King. She was pretty famous in her day--Don't know if she is still around or not. She saved a lot of dogs lives that were considered hopeless cases! Please think about what I have posted here. The least you could do is ask your vet (TELL YOUR VET) about it. And maybe it is something he is willing to look into and take it into consideration esp. if he isn't an old vet set in his ways! Personally, if it was my dog--I would want to see a holistic vet right off because of this being such a delicate thing to deal with--the deadliness of Parvo and how touchy it is to keep them alive.

Thanks, I've just faxed this over to let them know and will call in a bit to see what their thoughts are.

I am glad I caught you while you were still in the forum!!!
And am esp. glad you are checking into it all---Thank you on behalf of your poor puppy too---I love all dogs and want to help them all I can. I repeat that last sentence so much in here that I should just go to my profile page and use it as my signature! Please inform me/us as to the update on how puppy is doing and also what vet had to say about the quotes I sent you!!

Many years ago my mother successfully nursed a wee pervo-pup back to health. As I remember we did loose some of the litter, but this one survived with a load of TLC, vets bills and according to the vet, luck as well! He had no lasting effects and went on to become a fine farm dog. Pocket and I are crossing our fingers and toes for you

vitamin C and update
Firstly thank you Hip Pocket - it's great to hear a success story and that he didn't have long term effects.
An update - our vet is giving Ziggy vitamin C along with other nutrients and vitamins - so thank you for that advice. It's good to know we have a vet that knows what they're doing! When she called me back last night she said she is more optimistic, Ziggy is wagging his tail when they check in on him, and he ripped out his IV twice, so they've just removed it permanently now and are giving him fluids and medication under the skin by injection. He still won't eat on his own and he still has a fever that's spiking, but she said he is so much more energetic and is no longer dehydrated (has not vomited or had diahrea since he's been in there). We heading into day 4 of treatment and I'm feeling so much better. As soon as he starts eating and his fever stops we can bring him home. So we're not totally out of the woods yet, but it's looking very promising.
Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'll keep you posted.

I'm glad you have a good vet---There are so many that are just about useless!! Ziggy must be a little fighter---Give him a lot of attention/love to reinforce that---keep him fighting. I sure hope he makes it!! And yes--Do keep us posted--I'm sure members are anxious to know that he is going to be okay and that everyone is praying for a good outcome!
Thanks for keeping us posted. Give Ziggy a big hug for me when you see him next!!

Home and doing great!
Hi all,
Thanks to everyone for your support over the past week, it has been one of the most difficult weeks I think I've ever had! Ziggy came home Saturday afternoon, he's doing really well. Eating like he's never tasted food before (it's hard to restrict him he enjoys it so much!), drinking well, having good B.M.'s. He's even chasing our cat (poor kitty, I know!). I can't even believe he is the same little sick lethargic baby I had a week ago!
He does have to have another blood test in 2 weeks to make sure his white blood cells are increasing, but I can't even worry about that. We know the hard part is over.

I'm so so so happy to hear that everything is going well! I'll light a candle for your pup! What an awful ordeal it must have been for you!!! Your story should make everybody realise how lucky we are to have healthy babies. Wishing you and the little one the very best.

So Glad!!!!
Am so glad for you and Ziggy. He must be a real fighter with a healthy immune system to beat that. Please don't get him any vaccinations for as long as you can---They weaken the immune system!! I would get him on probiotics right now to help put the good bacteria he needs back in his system--antibiotics (which he prob. has had a lot of ) deplete the
good bacteria. Thanks for keeping us posted---always good to hear such good news!!
