I have commented in this forum before about yogurt--but it was 'human' yogurt. I recently asked a question of the vet on another dog forum who answers members questions about giving this to the dog and here is the 'copied' reply;

I don't know that I really push these either for 'normal' dogs but I do recommend them for dogs that are on antibiotics or have diarrhea. For dogs that might have diarrhea or be exposed to 'bad bacteria' or antibiotics, being on a probiotic can help them.

A person gets a lot of 'different' answers to almost everything!!?? So I am adding this and you have to decide if it is the right way to go!---referring to the human versus the dog type yogurt--Prob. best to just get the probiotic supplement and then you don't have to worry about it--But prob. more expensive!

hmmm...you're right. I was doing searches on yogurt last night. Kuma was just prescribed a new antibiotic for her vaginitis since the other didn't get rid of it. She also started up w/allergies temporarily; I'm assuming it was due to the AB. I'm going to give the human yogurt a try for now. Thanks for posting this, it's something to consider.

I was thinking I should of added this to my post: It is important to make sure your dog has probiotics at least after being on antibiotics. I got a 10 day supply of dog probiotics from the vet the last time my Max had antibiotics. It is when the probiotics are most needed to replace the good bacteria that the antibiotics destroyed. And it is the time the immune system needs a boost anyhow to help get the dog back up to 'snuff' after being ill!!
Note: It cost me about a dollar a pill. But if a person got them elsewhere--Probably cheaper! Although the time frame was important so vet a quick way.

Before i switched to a raw diet my Ella got sick quite often and whenever she throw up i was told by my vet to not feed her for 24 hours and then after that feed her a mixture of rice, ground beef and organic yogurt. As long as she held that down for a day i could start her back up on her normal food.

Now that i feed raw there has only been one time she has gotten sick, and that was bc as friend of mine who was watching her gave her some treats that she had gotten from walmart, yuck! So of course she got sick... But i still give her yogurt a couple times a week. She loves it, especially with fruit. My dogs weird she prefers the fruit and veggies over the meat.

C/M, I'm a little confused; wouldn't the yogurt serve the same purpose as the probiotic pills? I can buy the pills but I figure the yogurt would help with calcium as well.

I wish I preferred the veggies over meat. Well, unless we're talking veggies such as popcorn. hehe ...I <3 popcorn!

The human yogurt is 'iffy'. Dogs appear to have a different need than humans. The pill is more chance of the probiotic working. I don't know if they make yogurt for dogs that would have the kind of stuff needed. Prob. not saying this very well but amongst all the posts I did in this thread--the links, etc. will tell the story. I'm just not up to checking it all right now and pasting the info here. I know I couldn't afford the vet pills for an every day thing but if dog has been on antibiotics and needs help with the immune system--then at those times I would use the 10 day supply of pills.

Got it. I did read the link again. I'll stick with a good yogurt & see how it goes. At least I'll know what to try next if it doesn't work for her.
