Default dry nose

Does anyone know what causes this? My dog's nose has become extremely dry and crusty. One nostril is almost closed up. The vet has no idea and told me to put triple antibiotic cream or vaseline on it. It hasn't helped too much.

Can only think of 2 things. Does your dog drink from a plastic container? Or a galvanized container (which is toxic). Does your dog do any 'rooting/digging' with his nose? Make that 3 things--Maybe not getting enough oil in the diet. Might try rubbing contents of a vit.E capsule on the nose---Don't overdue as too much ingestion would be too much Vit. E.
----What kind of dog and how old? What kind of diet do you feed? Need a little more info!

---Just read your other posts---Guess you are talking here about the chihuahua with the heart failure? Maybe it has something to do with a side effect to meds? If you are supplementing with Omega 3 oil--make sure you give Vit. E as The Omega 3 oil uses up the vitamin E!

Sorry, but If your vet did nothing about this---Sounds like you need a different vet!

Mostly they say when a dog's nose is dry it's sick or has a fever but if that's just it its nose could be irritated too.

You may want to try using fresh aloe vera. If you don't have a plant, they are not expensive. Slit one of the leaves and apply the jelly-like substance to the nose. Wrap the rest of the leaf up in plastic wrap and refrigerate it. Apply it 3 - 4 times a day.
