Hi there,

I am new to dog ownership and am wondering what the opinions are out there on these foods. I am thinking about going with the Wellness brand foods, but don't know what is better.... the Core or the Super5Mix

Does anyone know if I went with the Super 5 Mix, could I feed say fish and sweet potato at one meal, and lamb at another? Will that make the dog ill? Is variety not neccessary?

Oh, the dog is a corgi/shepherd/terrier type dog... 35 lbs. female 18 months old

PS - I had also thought about the Solid Gold Food or Nutro Ultra.... any feedback?

Hi, The differance between the 2 are as follows. The core is a grain free food with a higher caloric density with lower carbs, the super 5 is a whole grain dog food. To feeding fish one day and lamb the next, i do not see any problem with doing that unless your dog is prone to allergies and should stay on 1 protein source at a time. I would pick solid gold over Nutro any day as Nutro uses separated grains, low caloric density with indeterminate fats in their foods. The knock on Solid gold is that they do not have their own Pet food manufacturer facility.

The Super5mix would be my choice. The CORE is a too high in protein for an everyday housedog. Solid Gold is also an excellent food. Nutro Ultra has a good ingredient list, but I don't trust the company's manufacturing practices. The company with the most impressive (to me) manufacturing standards is Natura...they make Innova, Healthwise, and California Natural. Any of these would be great choices, too (I'd steer away from the EVO, as it's also quite high in protein).

Other good foods to consider: Canidae, Prairie, Merrick, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, and Flint River Ranch.
