Default Dog bleeding from neck from vet

On tuesday this week my collie lost her voice, on Wednesday same thing on Thursday she seemed really tired and did not do much but sleep all day. Ate half of her normal food. On Thursday evening I took her to the vet and they could not find anything wrong w/ her, I spent $150.00 and they drew blood, and gave her a shot. She came home still just layed around and has not barked or been her self. She has eaten and drank water. Today she has still just been laying around. She ate about half of what she normally eats. At 5:00pm today my son calls and says she is bleeding from her neck. I came hm right away and took her back to the vet, the vet shaved the area and said it was from where they drew the blood and gave her the shot and she also has a baseball size bruise where they drew blood. The vet said they did not know why she is still bleeding 24 hours later they did not do anything at the vet and just sent her home. ( the vet does not even seemed concerned she is not barking.) I went to dinner and came home she has blood all over her neck area again. I put gauze on her neck and put her collar back on to see if I can stop the bleeding. It is still bleeding any suggestions??????

I think you need a better vet!!! What was the shot for that he gave her? And what was the shot called? And why a shot in the neck?! Could the bruising be from hitting a vein and bleeding from it into under the skin area? Hope I am saying that right--I know this can happen as I had it happen to me--It looks terrible but does not hurt. Now, I am by far not an expert here--that may not be why there is a bruise there! I hope your dog didn't get in to any poisons--esp. I am thinking rat poison. I have a home vet book and will leave you with some things to put in your browser or/and ask your vet about. symptoms of rat poisoning/dogs----heartworm symptoms/dogs----infectious canine hepatitis/symptoms----canine Ehrlichiosis/symptoms----Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever/dogs/symptoms and there are several things to look up under the heading in my book: Clotting Disorders----Von Willebrand's Disease (vWD)---Hemophilia/dogs (note-dig deeper into this one as females can get it if they inherit 2 recessive genes: one from a hemophiliac father, and the other from a mother who is either a hemophiliac or a carrier.)-----Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)/dogs Will quote a couple of paragraphs at the end of the Clotting Disorders chapter: Successful treatment of spontaneous bleeding requires rapid diagnosis.Dogs with severe blood loss are given fresh, whole blood containing red cells, platelets and active coagulation factors. Dogs with less severe blood loss that don't require blood transfusions are given fresh-frozen plasma or concentrates containing the missing coagulation factor.
---Treating vWD hypothyroid dogs with thyroid replacement therapy may prevent subsequent bleeding episodes. An important additional step in treating DIC is to control the underlying cause of the intravascular coagulation.

There must be a lot of info you are leaving out! Did the vet tell you what was ruled out by the blood tests? Were any of the tests not normal readings--like kidney or liver functions, etc? Why does it appear that he is not concerned or doing anything---Didn't he tell you anything!!?? He can't just leave this hanging!!! I think you need another vet from what I am reading from your post---And you need to do something before things get worse!!!

And Mr. Vega--Where are you with your 'expert' opinions!!??
(Note: Mr. Vega is a vet student with knowledge and access to more info then I have!!!)
Oh why do all these emergencies seem to happen in here on the weekends when a lot of members do not get in the forum??!!
And yes please keep us informed as we worry about your dog and don't like to dwell on what could of happened to your dog! And of course we are always hoping to hear good news!

corky/max,

Once again I agree with you. Why didn't the vet 'tell' him what kind of shot etc.?? Why didn't the vet tell him anything.
And just where is Mr. Vega when you need him.
And yes, when you lose confidence in your vet and have to go to the internet for consults, it's time to change.

My hope is that outcold70 finds answers and when he does, visits us again.

actually most injections are given in the neck ie: pinching an area and injecting but what I am waiting for is the blood results, if taken those are available in 24 hours. We need to know what that says before we can assume anything. Is there a blood disorder ie: Von Willebrands which could explain the bruising and bleeding. Until we have this information and what med was injected we are all just making assumptions as to what this could be and what the vet did right or wrong.

as the other posters have said, if your vet has left you in this situation where you have to turn to the internet then you really should change. Part of being a good vet (or doctor for that matter) is ensuring someone understands what the problem is , what and why procedures are carried out and reassurance. I really hope with all my heart all works out well for your dog.

Question

Once again, I would like to be able to send this member an email to come in and read the replies--since it appears he has not come back to check since he posted his concerns 2 days ago. He did not give an email address on his profile page as a means of contact. I am stating all this here in hopes that members will get the idea that it would be good to be able to contact another member in case of an emergency type situation by putting your email address as a means of contact!! I am also now worrying about what has happened!
