Insatiable American Bulldog-Weight Loss Plan?
My American Bulldog is an eating machine. He never seems to be full. He was eating Iams and Dog Chow when I first got him, but soon after I switched to Blue Buffalo for him and my girl.
When I rescued him, he was about 10 or so lbs underweight, at 89 lbs. with ribs showing and everything. Now, it's a much different story. He is overweight, and I'm afraid on his way to obese. I don't know his weight, but if I had to eyeball it, I'd guess at least 110, and possibly more.
His food doesn't seem to be the problem, because it fills up my girl just fine. It's also what my mom feeds her 2 Dobes and they are fine too. He was getting 3 cups/day. I've now cut him back to 2 1/2 cups/day.
As for exercise, we walk about a mile a day, and he runs in the yard with the other 3 dogs for about 1-3 hours a day, which is vigorous exercise when they all get chasing each other and the tennis ball.
My mom's dogs don't eat all at once. They get a bowl in the morning and one at night, but they eat at them all day, so there's usually always food over there. If I take my American over and don't take the food up, he will eat both bowls, even if he's just eaten! It's almost like he has an eating disorder.
I can't think of anything to help other than switching to a weight loss formula kibble since he's getting adequate exercise. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?
