Feeding people food
My grandmother always mixed leftover people food (meat, gravy, vegetables) into the hard dog food. Dogs love it; is it unhealthy for my puppy to have such treats? She is a shepherd mix (3 months old).

at 3 months they do need to be on a solid puppy food. Once adult, human food in moderation and balance is ok to add to dog food so long as you avoid those foods not good for dogs. I have given table scraps to my large breed dogs for years and in one case a rescue who was greatly under weight. In small breeds, keeping very small portions and again the right mix is acceptable as a treat.

Not everyone agrees on the answer! I feed my 2 dogs raw food and home-cooked so I am all for it BUT you have to be careful what is in the mixture----No onions, raisins, grapes, nutmeg--to name a few things. Giving you a link to a thread I did in here on foods that are hazardous to your dog. Please read it all the way to the end--very long thread!

I agree with Corky/Max so, I'm just going to keep my mouth shut.

I personally have no problem with the addition of table scraps as it is probably better than what most people use as their pets diet. As above, keep it in moderation and if the dog starts to turn their nose up to their dry rations stop the table scraps for awhile.

I think HEALTHY table scraps are just fine. I give Luca all the vegetables he will eat. I also give him a bit of meat. I try to avoid junk food and other fatty foods, though occasionally I'll cave. ( ) I think using people food is just fine for those who home cook or do raw food diet, because those people are knowledgeable about dog nutrition and create a balanced healthy diet. People food can hurt your dog and cause obesity if you let it get out of control, though. Most people food (especially processed food) is high in fat and sodium, and isn't very good for your dog. Like others have said, moderation is the key.
