A way to Feed?
This is interesting. I am not saying I agree or disagree--I am just the messenger!!!! Make your own decisions. If I would do this--my cocker would prob. lose some weight which would be good! I just don't know if I could get through the transition.-------------------->

I have to transition into raw before I dive into that schedule. Do you feed raw to your pets?

I do! I find it amazing!!!
Weight is perfect, great coat, perfectly white teeth, energy levels are good (high, but what do you expect w/ a border collie! also rarely ever any gas and no bad breath! It's expensive but I cant imagine why to feed anything else! I have heard tons of benefits from people switching over but my current dog has been on since 8 wks old... I feed once a day, I dont have the heart to miss a day but I heard its a good thing!

Yes I feed mostly raw (a little home cooking)--Never any commercial dog food!! I feed twice a day but wish I could feed once a day and only 6 days a week but just can't do it---My dogs are 10+ and 11+ and don't want to change now---Maybe the next dog! While we are talking raw feeding---Have you ever fed raw venison (from the wild)? I have a few hunters in my family so I get some this way. My dogs love this the most and I think they instinctively know it is the healthiest meat for them. It even has the good fat (If you don't know what I mean by healthy fat--too hard (scientific) to go into.) I will just say we have ruined our meat (fat) by the way cattle, etc. are not grass fed anymore.
Bacis Dad---What do you give at a typical meal?

Corky/Max: Unfortunately being in the suburbs of california, I dont have good access to wild game meat. I have found a local company that makes a pre-made raw food.
I feed primarily a chicken based food, it has Chicken Meat, Ground Bone, Necks & Organ Meat, carrots, broccoli, apples, spinach, acorn squash, beets, parsley, blueberries, cod liver oil and brewers yeast.
I tried a venison formula but my BC is sooo fussy. I also occasionally give her some meat trimmings when Im preparing a meal for my self, mostly raw steak trimmings. She also gets raw bones, primarily lamb bones and turkey necks. I was thinking about adding raw egg to her diet... any thoughts on that?
I wish I had access to a real butcher or some real raw meat like you, but unfortunately I dont. I think my girlfriend is squeemish enough with the smaller rawbones she gets! haha

I couldn't sit there and enjoy a meal knowing that my dogs hadn't had anything to eat for a day or more.

About the thoughts on raw egg---My 2 boys actually get a raw egg yolk almost every morning--the white of the egg usually gets stirred into the hot oatmeal or malt o-meal (not the chocolate flavor!) until it turns solid white. They do get the white raw too at times. Controversy about the raw white---The raw white can deplete the B-vitamin-Biotin but others say there is enough Biotin in the yolk to counteract this. SO!--I do both. And as you know (feeding a raw food diet)--you will get a lot of 'flack' about salmonella, etc. But truth be known there are a lot of commercial dog food out there that is full of salmonella bacteria! The main thing is to make sure your dog is healthy and it will withstand these problems. And a word about apples--They should be fed separately as they digest faster (all fruit) and will sit and ferment (rot) in the stomach while the rest of the food digests-- It is not a good thing but can't really tell you why unless I saw the info again. Wish it wasn't this way as my 2 will not eat apples by themselves--before I found this out I was mixing pulverized apples in with their other food--And darn! I have an apple tree too!
Am going to give you links to a couple threads I started in this forum that you might find informative. Will go copy them now and bring them to this post--so be looking here again!
Here is one of them: Foods that are hazardous to a dog And here is the other:
About Feeding Fruits & Vegetables
These are both really long threads but hope you will read it all.

Thank You Corky/Max. yeah the apples are "pulverized" in the food as well and I think it is low on thain chain of ingredients, but good to know I will watch over it carefully! But I will definitely read the posts, thanks for linking them up! I am thinking about starting a raw food post... thoughts?

Sounds good to me but, lol, I am into feeding raw! The controversy on this subject is about as bad as arguing about religion or politics!
Note: In that thread I gave you on veggies--I'm sure it mentions about the broccoli and spinach---not to overdo when it is raw--depletes vitamins, struvite crystals, etc. And ya, I tend to feed a lot of broccoli too! If it is cooked it doesn't cause any depletions/problems. This thread was a lot longer--all the way to the Z's but a glitch in this forum a while back caused about a week's worth of posts to be deleted and this thread happened to be in this time period--wouldn't you know--I just don't 'have it in me' to go back and post it all again! I actually lost about 100 posts in that week's 'mess-up!'

Wow! That's a bummer. But the links are up so I will get to reading them...
I know what you mean about contoversial material. Its a shame I actually dont tell some vets that I feed it just so I dont have to listen to them! haha
Yeah the raw food line (w/ vets) and dare I say the "Dog Whisperer" are lines I try to avoid... But I do like hearing from people that feed raw... The sacrifice is more worth it for me to hear the good through filtering out the bad!
