Tripe
Hey guys. Just wondering what you all think about feeding tripe. I have heard from many that it is great for dogs and has been known to cure many problems. Dog breeders in Europe used to feed this stuff to their dogs as their own secret recipe to cure all sorts of illnesses/abnormalities. I know you should only feed Tripe that is unbleached. This is often referred to as Green Tripe. My questions for you all are...
Do you feed Tripe?
Do you think Tripe is as wonderful as some make it out to be?
Would wolves in the wild consume Tripe/the stomach lining of their prey? ( I have heard contradicting evidence as far as this goes)
I haven't fed any Tripe to my dog yet, but I just bought her some canned Green Tripe (unbleached) from the Pet Store. What is the major difference between fresh Green Tripe and canned if they both claim to be unbleached? I thought Tripe was often bleached for resale to keep fresh/preserved. How can canned Green Tripe claiming to be unbleached able to stay "fresh" on the pet store's shelves for so long? There are other ingredients. It's NOT 100% pure Green Tripe. The ingredient list is as follows;
New Zealand Lamb Tripe, Garlic, Vegetable Gum, Menhaden Fish Oil, Glucosamine, Chondroitin.
Vegetable Gum is a thickening agent and can include Xanthin Gum which is bad for dogs, among others. I don't like the way they unspecified the third ingredient with the general term "Vegetable Gum". I also found a certain type of Vegetable Gum can be Bleached Starch. Would this technically make the Tripe Bleached??? I may not feed this product again because of this.
Here is the products website;
Tripett
Where can you but fresh, raw Green Tripe which is UNBLEACHED? Anyway to order online? I would love to feed raw, fresh Green Tripe instead of relying on canned Green Tripe which is very questionable with me as of now. I just don't see how Tripe can be unbleached and fresh if it comes in a can. Sounds impossible to me. There must be some loopholes in the system.
Feel free to discuss anything you'd like about feeding Tripe and also feel free to answer my questions/discuss them as you wish.
Thanks!
*By the way, if you'd like to read an informative article discussing the benefits of Tripe for dogs, check out the following link;

Though there is a chance that they may have eaten the stomach lining, the term tripe refers to cows and sheep and this was not the mainstay of wolves only when their normal prey resource was depleted.
It is not necessarily a miracle food product but just another product high in protien and nutrients along with Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids probiotics and phytonutrients.
It is not overly common in Europe but more so in the UK, New Zealand and Australia where there are high populations of sheep and cows.
The UK breeders I know do not see it in anyway as a medicinal food but just another food source that contains quality products that stink to high heaven but that they dogs love.

So nobody else feeds tripe
I fed it to Lucky the other night for the first time. You weren't kidding when you said it stinks to high heaven!

I don't feed my kids anything that I wouldn't consider fit for me to eat and the green lining of stomachs is not something I would eat.

I don't feed tripe--looked for it once in the groc. store--There was bleached but nothing else. I wouldn't want the bleached and if I remember right--seemed expensive and was 'weighty' so I just decided not to try finding it as prob. too expensive and pretty good size too (too much--and I wouldn't want the smelly stuff in my refrig/freezer either! If I had some though I would feed it as I imagine the dogs would go crazy for it and it sounds nutritious too. I don't know how a human could get it down-bleached or not! UGH!!
As to the question on bleached---That is mainly to change the color I would say. But I agree--sounds a little 'fishy' to me (lol, prob. smells almost a little fishy too!)--I wouldn't buy the canned for sure but you know what--it just 'hit me'--It is prob. not what it says it is BUT, the ones selling it in the can are relying on people to ignore the truth of it because it is a product that a person might buy since it is a hazzle to get the fresh green stuff and without the bulk and smell--and if the consumer wants it bad enough might just buy it!! But where is the 'inspector' on allowing the untruth to this label!

But you're not a dog.
Would you eat kibble?

I've tried it. Can't say I'd want to live on a steady diet of it but, my kids don't either. Just finished cooking up a huge pot of mom's home made delight for them.

Tripe is not suppose to make up any significant percentage of a dog's diet. Most people just give tripe once per week or so as a supplement or whatever.

Well, just think of it this way. Gross to us and gross to dogs are two TOTALLY different things. Hell, my dog loves the taste of poop! Me?... Don't think so (not that I've tasted it )
