Arrow Is Your Pet Anemic?

Most pets come with a bundle of energy but if your pet seems to barely have enough energy to eat, which is always a favorite activity, then perhaps you should take him/her to the vet to be
checked for anemia. Anemia in pets can be caused by parasites or health conditions such as ulcers. The first thing you can do to help your pet if they have anemia is to check for parasites. Young puppies and kittens are highly susceptible to hookworms, other types of worms, and even fleas that suck their blood. This can cause severe anemia and problems for puppies and kittens so make sure the problem is addressed immediately.

Puppies and kittens require shots in order to prevent parasites from attacking their body, so make sure your puppy or kitten gets all of their shots on time. Also, certain types of medications can cause anemia so make sure you ask your vet about any medications you maybe giving your pet. Some drugs may cause the immune system to attack itself or healthy blood cells, which will reduce the ability for oxygen to flow through the blood cells causing anemia. Another remedy you can do to help your pet if they are suffering from anemia is to give them foods that are rich in protein and iron, such as liver. Give smaller liver portions to your puppy or kitten. You can also give your pet some geritol, which is rich in iron and B vitamins. Of course, consult with your vet on the appropriate amount to give.

Supplementing his diet with B vitamins and iron. You can crush the vitamin and mix it in their food. Don’t try giving the pet the vitamin whole; it would be more work and frustrating for you. Make sure give your pet the type of animal food that is rich in iron and vitamin B. The last thing you can do to help your pet if they are suffering from anemia is to allow them some quiet time.

There are several other ways to spot anemia in your pet other than the lack of energy. You can take a look in their mouth, it should be a healthy pink, brown or even black. If your pet’s mouth is pale that could
be a sign of anemia. You can also look at the eyes, if you notice a droopy look or redness that could be a sign. Always take your pet to the vet if you notice these changes. Pets should be full of energy, especially puppies and kittens; a lack of energy is abnormal.

Mine are perfectly healthy. I'm the one who's anemic!

Dogs will also become anemic when they are in later stages of renal failure.
