Our shelter dog
Hi,
I am hoping that someone will be able to help me.
I recently adopted a Wheaten Terrier mix approx 1 year old. He has a mild case of kennel cough and he is very timid and shy.. He only weighs about 20 lbs.
He seems to be getting better every day, but he still seems a bit weak.
My question is, Should he be eating puppy food or adult dog food? The shelter sent us home with adult dry dog food. We were thinking since he is so thin that we should mix some puppy food in with his adult food.
good idea? bad idea?:-?

The big difference between adult and puppy food is the amount of fat and calories. Puppy food has more fat and calories than adult food. In this case, yes it isn't a bad idea to go ahead and get him on a puppy food formula until he puts on some weight. Once he reaches his ideal weight transition into feeding adult food and adjust the amount from there depending on the body condition.
Good luck with your new pup!

Has your vet done any bloodwork? Sometimes there could be a health issue as to the thiness.
Personally, I don't think the puppy food will make a difference. Have you tried giving some premium canned food?
Or you can try a recipe called Satin Balls. You can google it. Not sure if I can post links. It is used for dogs who need to put on some weight. It works very well. Many rescues use this.

Thank you for help!
I took Rory to the vet last week and it turns out he is about 2lbs underweight, not nearly as bad as I had thought.
He had an ear infection and Kennel cough.
My vet said to continue mixing in the puppy food until he gains a few pounds.
Other than that he is a healthy dog!
He was very shy and timid and is just now wagging his tail and playing with us.

Me too
He will warm up to you in no time. Some dogs take a little bit longer when coming from shelters. Plus with the KC and ear infection he wasn't feeling very well.
How many times a day is he being fed?

Thanks Everyone!
Just wanted to give you all an update.
Rory is a completely different dog. No longer a shy, timid dog!
He is so so sweet and we are so happy that he is part of our family!

When Luna has seizures, sometimes she won't eat for a few days. I give her puppy food with Swanson chicken broth dumped on it. It puts the weight back on after not eating for a few days. Adult food really isn't good for puppies either sick or healthy.
