Default puppy mange

Some friends of ours recently adopted a puppy, they brought him over to play with our dog. They just informed us that their dog has mange, and it is contagious. I called the vet and she just told me to keep an eye on our dog, but I'm really stressed out. Has anyone exposed their dog to mange before, and them not contract it? Its been about 2 weeks, and he's acting normal, I hope I'm just being paranoid.....

This may better help you to understand mange. Granted, most dogs are susceptible to demodectic mange (demodex).
This will help clarify that your dog is likely not to have contracted it as it is not contagious since all dogs especially puppies carry the microscopic mite that is the primary cause along with immune system issues.

Thanks for the reply!! I was just nervous because their vet told them he was contagious, and had them drop out of their obedience class so he didn't spread it to other dogs. I'm sure my lil guy is alright!! Thanks for the info!

More than likely this is not the kind of mange that is contagious as you mention puppy BUT how old are you referring to when you mention your friend's puppy/dog as a puppy!?--If it is a older dog--It could be a different kind of mange as there are several types of mange and I know one is contagious for sure.. Call your friend and find out the kind of mange it was diagnosed with. It kind of bothers me that if their vet said it was contagious it might be if this friend's puppy is older. Here is a link on the kinds of mange: What are the Different Types of Mange?

Their pup is only 4 months old, our pup is 9 months old. I have to assume their vet was taking precautions , in case there was a dog in the class with a low immune system? I'm not sure if that even makes sense, this whole mange thing is new to me!! lol I guess I will just keep an eye on him, and if I see ANYTHING fishy on Tucker we are headed to the vet ASAP!! Thanks for all of the great info!!

I agree with Corky/Max. You need to find out what type of mange their dog has. There are different types and people can catch some of them.
