Blind Bichon Frise
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My rescue 6yr old Bichone Frise has recently gone blind with progressive retinal atrophy. Today his groomer told me he would need to be sedated in future. She has been grooming him for 3 years, but he has not been easy.
Now he is blind he is finding life hard. We are both adjusting.
Should I sedate him for grooming?
Has anyone else got a blind dog?

As one who has rescued for 50 years, I primarily these days rescue the senior and those with health needs. I have 2 currently that are blind. One came to me blind and she learned to adjust to my home in a matter of a few weeks. The other has gone blind in the past few months which has made it easier for her as she already knew her way around. Dogs are much different than people as they can acclimate and fine tune their other senses much better than we can thus able to compensate. In the case of grooming like all other activities, the dog just needs time to adjust. I would discuss this with your vet regarding the sedating. They would be better to give advise on the pros and cons. Good Luck.

No I am not a Miniature Doberman, I was around 200 years before Karl Frederich Louis Doberman created the Dobie, and as for my friends the Manx cats, yes they are better at playing fetch than I am, I am a Miniature Pinscher.
