Default HELP! my dog is peeing unknowingly!

Hi everyone

I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas (besides the obvious taking her to the vet) about what could be going on with my dog ( i wont be able to get her back to the vet till later in the week, and being a weekend, the vet is closed to call)

I have a 2 year terrier mix dog, she has recently had a bad rash on her stomach From what the vet figure was an allergy, to either her food or environment, she has been trying new food the last week (Medi-cal royal Canin) and also been on antibiotics and a steroid, (both for about 9 days) she is being weened off the steroid right now.

yesterday i noticed a wet spot on the floor where she had been laying, and having just taking up our carpet to start renovations, i figured it was a new smell, and perhaps she hadn't been out side in time,.

Again today a puddle on the floor from where she was, definitely pee, she has been peeing while laying down, not really noticing it, and even worse, again just now on our bed!

So she has been peeing, for what i can see unknowingly or uncontrolably. She does still eat and drink as normal, and goes out side as normal,

I'm wondering if perhaps this is a side effect to the meds? or somthing eles going on? anyone had a similar situation before?

I thought at first perhaps a UTI but shes on antibiotics, so i kinda thought probably not that........
any help appreciated.

If you haven't already--You might check out this thread done only 4 days ago: Looking for advice and tips on why my Lab leaks Has she been spayed?

I can't tell you if the meds are causing this but you should be giving a probiotic to put back the good healthy bacteria (In the gut) that the antibiotic took out! What meds is/was she on? (Prob. prednisone for one!) I hope the rash doesn't come back--Prednisone masks/hides things--may give relief from itching but does not cure the problem. I am no expert but I am wondering if an antibiotic can do anything for an allergy either?!! I would think the only way to get rid of the allergy is to figure out what is causing it and stay away from whatever it is---Could be a food allergy. A good bet this time of the year--flea season--She may be reacting to a flea bite allergy too. Just one bite can cause problems (if allergic) for a long time!

I hope your vet is a good one--I have my doubts! Have you thought about seeing a hopefully better vet--One that doesn't cover up the problem and tries to get to the bottom of the problem period!

Here is a thread on prednisone: Puppies on Prednisone

ANd here is another on prednisone:About Prednisone

I am giving this link on Cushing's Disease because of the reference to prednisone---Also note tha there is excessive peeing in this disease---Your dog prob. doesn't have this but thought you might be interested in the over-all picture.--> Cushing's Disease in Dogs - What is it, and how do we treat it?

This link may have some answers for the leakage but it is a long read so be sure and read thoroughly--I know there is some info for you in it! (prednisone may be the cause of the recent leakage!)--> Urinary Incontinence in Dogs

If Proin is ever mentioned to you by a vet---Please read this thread (very long and important--Proin is a 'dog killer!!'):
Is your dog on PROIN? READ THIS!

Please keep us updated on how things are going! Don't want to keep worrying about not knowing--love dogs!

Default Female Incontinence

You dog is incontinent. This is not a housebreaking issue at all. This is often diagnosed simply by explaining to a vet what you explained in your post - she is peeing in her sleep.

There are a few solutions to this problem. One is a weekly hormone pill - some vets do not like to use this method, but for some dogs it adjusts the estrogen levels to where they need to be. The second, more common solution is a syrup called Propalin. This can be a bit more costly but does work very well...

The third, which might be necessary for you, is a surgery to fix her muscles. This is not a common solution, but given you have such a young dog may be the problem.

The bottom line is, you need to see a veterinarian to fix this problem. It's not behavioral, and it can be fixed. It's not often you see incontinence in a dog this age - but it does happen. Hope this helps!

Please believe me when I say that no mater what the vet prescribes, research before u give it!!

I did not and because of the vets error, I lost my Jasmine 57 days after her first dose of ProIn There is no miracle cure. If I knew then what I know now: Jasmine would have worn doggie diapers. I would have pursued natural remedies and if they didn't work then I would have put her in diapers.

Please let me know how your furbaby is doing. I really don't want to add her name to my 'list'.

If you doubt what I say, read Jasmine's story at:

If your dog was on steroids for any length of time, this could be the problem, which will remedy itself once you wean her off the steroids.

Hey Thanks so much for all your replies!

I called the vet, and its the steroids, they can make your dog very thirsty, causing her to drink more, and also loose some bladder control. shes doing great now though, no accidents in the house. for a day or two. shes being weened off the prednisone now.
she is taking the antibiotics because she had an infection in her skin, from licking and scratching and everything.

right now her skin looks great, and feels very soft, waiting for fur to grow back if it will, she has new food shes trying, medi cal skin support, i'm hoping it works.

Thanks again for your replies
