Default Umbelical Cord Hernia

This actually pertains to a kitten I am fostering, but I know puppies can get them too. I've never seen anything quite like it, and was VERY freaked out when I picked up this kitten for her flea bath and found a lump on her belly.

After researching, I've found it's quite common and usually goes away. I've heard that there are cases when the hernia becomes deadly, but not much else about it.

Can somebody please tell me when I should be worried? I know that most vets will just remove the hernia during the spay surgery, so I already planned on keeping this kitten until she's old enough to be spayed and make sure nothing else is needed, but what should I be looking out for? Is there anything I can do in particular to help subside the swelling? Anyone with any first-hand experience?

The kitten is about 2 months old. Speaking with the former owner she noticed the knot, but says it wasn't as big (could have something to do with the kitten being much older now.) It's about the size of a marble. She doesn't seem to be in any discomfort when it's being touched and she doesn't seem ill otherwise.
