Default springer spaniel skin problem, please help

My girl friend brought home this dog that has a serious skin condition. It was at a house with many cats and was not cared for at all. The dog has open sores and hair loss on it's back end. She has another dog already and can't afford to go to the vet. I shaved the dog down because it smelled real bad. Then we could see how bad the problem really was. It is all over it's body, worse were it can get at it. The dog is in pain. I put a lamp shade on it's head to prevent it from biting at it's rump. I bought some hot spot from walmart. Can any of you recommend another treatment? It doesn't look to good right now and she is worried it will infect her other dog. The smell is still there as well. It is very good natured and about 2 years old. Send advice to hoboarchery@yahoo.com or reply here...thanks

This could be anything from a flea allergy, reaction to a chemical, mites or mange. The dog needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible.

I've met a couple people with springer spaniels and it seems to be a common thing with them that they have very sensitive skin. One thing is they feed them certain foods to avoid food allergies. I used a nice oatmeal shampoo when bathing one once. It seemed to help.

Default I tried to help

The dog was on it way back to normal. I put a lamp shade type shield on it and after about a week it was healing up. Then it wiggled out of it and licked and bit itself all open again. It was neglected from the previous owners. She is going to get rid of it or already has. The smell is just so nasty.

Default skin problems

I have the same issue right now with my dog. She is a mixed breed. She does have an odour and sore spots. I think it may be an allergy to fleas or something else. It seems to clear up if I take the cap off the sores...I know thats gross but she seems to get comfort from it... however it seems the sores move around to her legs and stomach area. Thats why I thought fleas. I couldn't find anything though. I've spoke with a vet and they provided me with a scrub to use. Same results clears up and reappears. How did you fair out????????????? She is 7 years old and a great pet.

Default not too good

the dog was put down after it gave the other dog the same trouble. It was told to be a reaction to fleas. She was able to clear up her first dog.

dermatitis from a flea allergy is NOT contagious!

people who cannot afford vet care for their pets should not have them.

food is also a leading cause of skin problems & itching in dogs & cats

Wink allergies

Hi, I have been reading these forums for awhile now and I want to tell you that I have a Brittany with the same problem only I think I have conquered it. I changed his dog food to Adult Max (lamb and rice) from Wal-mart, give him omega-3 and garlic tablets. He also had ear infections from this problem and found that it was yeast infection. The garlic tabs are a natural antibiotic.

Hope this helps

Default dog food

I was feeding them, mom and son, walmarts ol roy lamb and rice, but it has fillers. The Adult Max is Lamb and rice with no fillers. It comes in 20lb bags for almost $14.00. It is in a gray bag. I have been trying to find a solution to our dog's problem for years. The vet just kept giving him steroid shots for the itching and antibiotics for the infections. You have to give the dog food anywhere from two weeks to a month to take effect. In the mean time give benadryl, 1 in morning and 1 at night and rub Aloe Vera on the postules from the allergies.
Don't forget the garlic tablets. They are also good for keeping fleas away.

I'm asking what BRAND is the adult max lamb & rice?

Ol' Roy is some of the absolute worst food there is but I'm not sure you are any better off now. I will explain to you if you just tell me the brand of food you are now feeding

I'm sorry, I will find out as I put the dog food in a container and threw away the bag, but I am going to Wal-mart tomorrow and I will check it out. I'm sorry I gave more info than you wanted, I thought I was helping.

Oh my no, you can never give to much info - its just that I can't search for it to see what is in it without the actual brand name. I probably just didn't make myself clear as to what I needed.

I have no doubt the problems were being caused by the other food & I'd love to help you now.

vets do not get any training in school about nutrition so really know very little about it. thus the steroids & antibiotics. keep in mind that all these vet expenses have to be added to the cost of the food you are feeding if that is what is causing the problem.

if this is what I think it is, I believe we can cure the dogs problem at a reasonable price

if you like you can email me at suebgone@aol.com

Ok, we're on the same wave link now.
I just want to say that my dog isn't showing any signs of the problem now and I hope that it doesn't come back. That's why I wanted to share what I have done for him.

ahhh now we hit the jackpot. you really got in on the ground floor on this one, it is very new & made for WM. there are 2 X's in the name which are needed to google - even then it is very difficult to find the ingredients.

it is waaaaaaaaaay better than that crap you had been feeding & really not to bad a food.

the omega 3's & 6's should be balanced but really help the skin & fur - thus help stop the itchies from dry skin. some things you may want to add for a change - canned salmon or mackeral, flax seed oil

a lot of the problem before was when there is brewers dried yeast in the food that causes yeast infections.

yes, food can make a huge difference in a pets life - glad yours is progressing so well
