How is your dog today? How old is he? Is he a senior? Not sure (right now, anyhow) where you live but spring here and my dogs seem to manage to find burdocks and get them stuck in their paws or the coat and if I don't catch them at it--they will use their teeth to try and pull them out and may get the d*mn pieces of the burs stuck in their tongue, mouth, or throat! Have you checked in your dog's mouth thoroughly to see if anything is stuck in his mouth or throat?I am hoping this coughing is not a sign of heart problems. If you haven't found anything and he is still doing it--You need to see a vet and have him listen to his heart and maybe blood work is in order too. This could be a lot of things--obstruction comes to mind too! Best see a vet and if something 'needs fixing' or treating--the sooner the better--as sometimes getting to it in time before it is to late to fix or treat!
You mentioned that he had the diarrhea last week----It may be related--Maybe he has caught something/disease and it has progressed to more/other symptoms now. Could be something to do with the respiratory system too.
Here is what it says in my home vet book about diagnosing a cough:
...A deep, dry hacking cough made worse by exercise or excitement is characteristic of kennel cough.
...A moist, bubbling cough indicates fluid or phlegm in the lungs and suggests PNEUMONIA.
...A high, weak, gagging cough, followed by swallowing and licking the lips, is characteristic of tonsillitis and sore throat.
...A spasm or prolonged coughing that occurs at night or while lying on the sternum (breastbone) suggests heart disease.
Again I ask how old your dog is--An older dog is more apt to have heart problems, cancer, etc.
