A site all should review
Though pertaining to purebreds, it address all breeds thus if you dog is a mix and you know the mix it will help with issues such as inherited diseases common to these breeds.

Interesting. I am not at all surprised that the Saint Bernard and Great Pyrenees top the list for most musculoskeletal problems.

I can understand the smaller breeds dying from getting diabetes as a main reason----The longer they live the more chance of getting this 'noose around my neck' disease. I call it noose around my neck because I have it and that's what I call it!

"Athletic breeds, such as the Australian Heeler, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Jack Russell Terrier, were prone to traumatic causes of death."
Is this another way of saying freak accidents or accident prone? Just curious...

A rolled up newspaper can be an effective training tool when used properly. For instance, use the rolled-up newspaper if your dog chews up something inappropriate or has a housebreaking accident. Bring the dog over to the destroyed object (or mess), then take the rolled-up newspaper and hit yourself over the head as you repeat the phrase,"I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG, I FORGOT TO WATCH MY DOG!"

I was wondering that too. Maybe dog fighting for the staffie and being kicked by a cow for the heeler. No clue about the JRT.

The small terrier groups ie; Parson, JRT and Miniature Pinschers also Fox terriers are so focused on the hunt that often fail to see the pit falls. Thus traumatic death.

I have to admit that the idea of the smaller terriers suffering death through trauma did make me smile - we always had it in the back of our minds that our old terriers might die prematurely from hurtling head first into a tree!

I had to laugh at that. My neighbors across the street have two of the most obnoxious JRTs I have ever seen and they refuse to get them fixed. Yesterday she let them cross the street and crap in my yard. I can imagine a traumatic death if Sammie is out in the yard when they do that. She hates those two dogs.

You should do what our friends did - carry it across the road and leave it on their lawn very graciously!
I should have added that our old boys lived to be 18 and 16 and died peacefully of old age without suffering any trauma other than occasionally hearing the word "NO"!

Yep, I can relate to that. I have had them live well past the standard and NO is a common word in this house without a doubt. But it also holds true for the 10 cats.
